Pexels.

FARGPACK robot studies visual references, color and composition
Original topic illustration; this is not a screenshot of the tool.

Reference Lab helps you move from a design brief to a focused image search, then examine the colors and visible structure of a selected image. Use it when your research folder is growing but the question you want to answer is still unclear. A useful session should end with a source, a specific observation and a design decision to test in your own work.

This guide is for packaging and identity designers, students and anyone preparing a visual direction. It follows the interface checked on 3 October 2026, including a controlled local-image example and successful JSON downloads. Open FARGPACK Reference Lab; the EN/AR switch changes the interface language. The search depends on public sources, while uploaded-image analysis can take place locally.

Know what you put in and what you get back

The search inputs are a project name, a brief and optional constraints such as format, style, composition, lighting and color direction. The output is an editable search phrase and public reference results. The analysis input is a supported local image or a usable public image URL; the output includes image metadata, sampled colors and estimated composition descriptions. A project JSON and a separate analysis JSON preserve different parts of this process.

These outputs do not recover the original layout file, identify a font reliably or explain the designer’s intention. They also do not establish reuse rights. Treat the tool as a way to ask better questions of an image. Keep your own project requirements nearby: audience, message, format, production constraints and the decisions you actually need to make.

Write a brief that gives the search a direction

In Search, enter a recognizable Project name and describe what you want to design. A brief such as “an editorial coffee launch graphic with warm colors and room for a short product story” is more useful than “beautiful coffee design.” Select Design format and Visual style for the application you need, rather than choosing an attractive style unrelated to the project.

Open the finer search details to refine the Search subject in English, Composition, Lighting, Color direction and Words to exclude. These are search constraints, not production settings. Excluding “mockup” may help when you want to see flat graphic layouts, but it can also hide useful case studies. Change one constraint at a time so you can understand why the results changed.

Build and edit the search phrase

The Coffee, Perfume and App presets are starting points. During the checked example, Coffee filled the project name “Coffee House” and a sample Arabic brief. Building the search phrase produced “specialty coffee editorial social media design warm earthy colors.” Read the phrase before searching. Remove terms that do not describe your project, add a useful material or format, and keep the subject recognizable.

  1. Choose the preset or write your own brief.
  2. Use Build search phrase to prepare the phrase.
  3. Edit Search phrase — make it yours.
  4. Choose All sources, Pinterest, Behance, Google Images or Pexels in the source selector.
  5. Choose Find references and inspect the results.

The checked search returned 24 public image cards from Pinterest and Pexels. That is an observed result from one session, not a permanent inventory or a promise for every query. Search availability, result quality and the ability to retrieve a large image can change independently.

Choose a reference for a reason

Inspect a result’s source before treating it as evidence. A complete project may explain the context behind an attractive crop; a repost may omit the designer or show a low-resolution copy. Prefer the original project where possible. Decide whether the image helps with hierarchy, color relationships, photography, spacing or another named question. If it answers none of them, keep searching rather than saving it because it matches a fashionable look.

Selecting a usable result can take you into analysis. If retrieval fails, try a different source or use a rights-cleared local image. Do not expect an account-restricted page, an expiring private link or every image visible on a website to load through the tool. A public project URL and a direct image URL are different inputs; the latter points to the image itself.

Analyze the image against the design question. Image source and usage rights are separate decisions; measurements and estimates need designer review.
Actual analysis capture of a locally supplied synthetic image with known 50%, 25% and 25% areas. No client image was used.

Run the controlled palette example

For a repeatable exercise, prepare an 800 × 600 PNG with solid areas: teal #007F82 covering 50%, dark ink #182E35 covering 25% and gold #C8873E covering 25%. Use an image you create yourself. Open Analysis and choose the file through the upload control, or use the drop area where available. Supported inputs are PNG, JPG and WEBP, with the displayed limit of 12 MB; the source also checks a 60-million-pixel ceiling.

The tested synthetic image returned the three colors with exactly those shares. Its metadata showed PNG, 800 × 600, a 1.33:1 aspect ratio and approximately 2.7 KB. The reported brightness was 37.82%, saturation 73.33%, transparency 0% and relative luminance 0.165. These values belong to this particular test file. Different compression, gradients, transparency or color conversion can change a real image’s sampled result.

Read measured values before interpretation

In 01 Analyze, start with dimensions, ratio and format to check that you are examining the expected file. A proxy copy may differ from the original in dimensions or format, so use the source-file record when exact original specifications matter. Color shares describe sampled visible pixels and exclude transparent ones. For photographs, treat the percentages as approximate summaries rather than exact coverage instructions for a new design.

A palette also says little about the function of each color. A small accent could carry an important action or product variant, while a large background area may be deliberately quiet. Write a relational observation, such as “a restrained gold accent sits against teal and dark ink,” then test new proportions with your own content. Do not turn an extracted HEX value into an unverified print specification or a guarantee of readable text.

Separate measurement from interpretation. Analysis does not recover fonts, layers or object semantics
Original explanatory diagram separating pixel measurements, estimated composition and the designer’s own judgment.

Use Deconstruct as a visual prompt

Open 02 Deconstruct to inspect the contrast distribution and composition reading. The interface explicitly labels this interpretation as estimated. The controlled example showed Low contrast, Vivid color intensity, Mid-tone overall tone and Center estimated visual weight. The 3 × 3 grid, Rule of thirds overlay and Visual weight center help compare regions; they are not original layers or proof of the intended reading order.

A face, a word or a familiar symbol can attract attention for reasons that a contrast-weighted calculation cannot describe. Compare the estimate with your own reading. In 03 Principles, use hierarchy, color relationships and composition as prompts for an original response. Ask which part of the relationship serves your message and which part should change for your audience, format or bilingual text.

Turn the observation into a small design test

Suppose the fictional brief is a coffee launch card. Record three separate statements: the reference uses a broad warm field; the product is separated from supporting text; your test will reserve an uninterrupted region for a bilingual headline. The first two describe observations, while the last describes your own decision. This distinction makes a research presentation clearer and reduces accidental imitation.

Build two small layouts with your own logo, wording and imagery. Keep the intended message the same and change the color balance or spacing. Compare them at final viewing size, not only while zoomed in. The tool cannot choose the better solution for you; the comparison should resolve the question that started the research. If it does not, revise the question before collecting another large batch of references.

Save the analysis and the project separately

Copy analysis gives you text to place in your working notes; Download analysis saves the analysis JSON. For the research workspace, open Project files and choose Save project. Both downloads worked in the checked session. Name the files with the project and date so that an analysis of one image is not mistaken for the complete project state.

Open project is available for a saved project JSON. Export the current project before loading another, and keep the unmodified backup. A successful download does not by itself prove that every future restore will succeed. The current main interface did not expose a dependable reference save/edit/delete workflow during the check, so this guide does not make that workflow a required step. Preserve source links and decision notes alongside the exported files.

The image route affects privacy. Keep a JSON backup before replacing the project; storage is local
Illustrative privacy and backup paths: local uploads differ from public URLs that may use wsrv.nl; JSON provides a separate saved copy.

Understand local processing and external requests

The privacy message states that uploaded images are analyzed locally. It also states that public image URLs may be sent to wsrv.nl to enable color extraction. These are different data paths. Use a synthetic or approved local image when a brief involves confidential artwork, and do not paste private links, credentials or client-only URLs into a public-source workflow. Public search itself also needs network access.

Store exported projects where their contents are appropriate to share. A backup can include a brief, links or notes that reveal client work even when the source images are public. Saving a reference, extracting its palette or downloading its analysis does not grant a license to reproduce the image, logo, lettering or layout. Keep the original source and obtain the permissions required for any intended reuse.

Fix common problems without losing the project

  • Unhelpful results: shorten the query, check the format and relax one overly narrow constraint.
  • Image will not load: verify that it is public and supported; try another source or an authorized local copy.
  • Unexpected palette: check crop, transparency, source versus proxy dimensions and whether a photograph contains many near-identical tones.
  • Composition seems wrong: remember that the reading is estimated; human meaning and intended hierarchy need your review.
  • Copy fails: use Download analysis instead and verify the file reached your downloads folder.
  • Storage warning: export the current project before clearing browser data or changing devices.

Finish with a usable research record

Before leaving, keep the brief, final search phrase, original source, measured observations, your own decision and the relevant JSON files together. Mark uncertain statements as uncertain and review the actual output files. The useful deliverable is a decision you can explain and test, supported by a traceable reference.
