You open a project folder and find dozens of beautiful images, yet none explains which direction the packaging should take. The moodboard has become a collection of favourites. A useful packaging moodboard starts with a decision the team needs to make: should the pack communicate through quiet materials, expressive illustration, or strong typography? Every reference should help answer that question.
This guide uses an original teaching exercise to turn references into a direction you can actually design. The example is a fictional tea project, not a real client commission or a claim about market research. You can work on paper or in a design application. What matters is a clear arrangement and a record of where your references came from.
Write the board’s question before collecting images
Identify the product, intended audience, context of use, and one meaningful production constraint. For the tea exercise, the question might be: how can a small pack with limited printing communicate a calm everyday ritual? That wording immediately challenges references that depend on elaborate finishes or expensive photography the project cannot support. A constraint helps you choose without preventing an attractive idea.
Write three qualities that you can translate into visible decisions, such as clear, warm, and ordered. “Professional” alone gives you little to work with. Under each quality, suggest a possible expression: comfortable spacing, an earthy colour, or a consistent text grid. These are hypotheses to test when you sketch the package, not finished solutions you must defend at any cost.
Collect references with different jobs
An architectural image can explain rhythm, fabric can suggest texture, and a book cover can show how a headline relates to empty space. If every reference is a competitor’s package, your exploration can become unnecessarily narrow. Equally, avoid references so remote from the application that nobody understands their relationship to the product.
Organise the search into composition, colour, typography, material, and illustration or photography. Add one sentence explaining each reference. “I like this” is less useful than “this shows how a title remains clear inside a quiet composition.” The second statement identifies a lesson you can apply to an independent design. Adobe describes moodboards as a way to establish direction and personality before execution; the board does not replace the final design.
Separate inspiration from copying a solution
Taking one package’s logo placement, frame, colours, and illustration produces a close resemblance even if you change the product name. Reduce the reference to a general principle, then explore a different composition. You can learn from the balance between empty space and text without reproducing the recognisable elements of the original work.
Keep the creator or source name, URL, and access date beside reference images. An image being visible online does not establish permission to use it on a commercial package. Maintain separate research and licensed production asset folders. Research images should not accidentally reach the printer as production artwork. If the final design needs the original asset, check its usage terms for that application.
Build two directions with different underlying ideas
For the fictional tea pack, one direction could use botanical line drawing and warm open space. Another could rely on large typography and a geometric rhythm. The difference is how the product communicates, not simply which background colour you choose. Give each direction its own coherent board and a short explanation of how it answers the original question.
Compare the directions against the same constraints. Can each fit the available printing process, surface area, and information hierarchy? If the first depends on a textured stock, examine whether its visual idea still works on the actual available material. Do not treat a material photograph as proof that the supplier can deliver it within the project’s scope.
Translate qualities into drawable decisions
After selecting an initial direction, create a short interpretation sheet. Beside “calm,” explain what that means for spacing and hierarchy. Beside “warm,” state whether you mean photographic lighting, colour temperature, or paper texture. People can understand the same adjective differently. Recording its intended visual expression makes the next discussion more concrete.
Record what the board does not imply, too. Rough paper in a reference may communicate a visual feeling without specifying the final stock. A golden colour does not automatically approve metallic foil. Boundaries beside the decisions help prevent production expectations that the budget or brief cannot support. They also give another designer enough context to continue the work coherently.
Test the board on a real packaging face
Draw three quick black-and-grey layouts containing the product name and essential information at the likely final size. Avoid starting with an elaborate photorealistic mockup. Lighting and material effects can make a weak hierarchy appear persuasive. At this stage you are checking whether the direction can organise information on the available surface.
Apply just two or three ideas from the board to each sketch. One might combine clear typography, a generous margin, and simple illustration. Another might use a colour block and a different rhythm. If a layout requires every reference to explain itself, the direction probably needs more focus. Return to the original question and simplify the relationships rather than adding decoration whenever the page feels incomplete.
Review with specific questions
Ask which direction communicates the product most quickly, which decision seems inconsistent with the brand, and which element may be difficult to produce. “Which board is prettier?” turns the meeting into a taste contest. When somebody offers a broad objection, ask for an example and record an adjustment you can test. This is more useful than treating the objection as a verdict on every element.
If the team wants to combine the two directions, identify exactly what transfers and why. Photography from one direction might work with the other’s text grid. Combining every feature can destroy the logic of both. When the combination becomes a genuinely different direction, document a third version rather than leaving it as a verbal instruction that different people interpret differently.
Hand over a conclusion the design phase can use
Deliver a dated board, reference sources, three visual rules, one application sketch, and a list of unresolved decisions. Briefly record why alternatives were rejected. Otherwise, a previously excluded idea may return in each meeting simply because nobody remembers the reason for the earlier decision.
Finally, try describing the direction in two sentences without showing the board. If you can explain the relationship between the product, typography, colour, and imagery, the references have become a shared design language. If you can only name the pictures, refine the selection. The board should help a designer make decisions and help a client assess later work against criteria they understand.
