Deep shadows in a chocolate photograph may look appropriate on a carton while prepress asks for lower total ink coverage in parts of the image. Brightening the entire photograph is not automatically the right response: it could weaken the intended appearance without addressing the cause. Total ink coverage in packaging concerns the color values at relevant locations and the printing conditions that will receive them.

Start with the limit confirmed by the printer for this job, inspect the final file under the agreed output conditions, and locate the exceedances before choosing a remedy. Do not apply one remembered limit to every material or equate a digital check with approval of drying or physical print quality. The calculations below are hypothetical, intended to teach interpretation rather than specify a production recipe.

What does total ink coverage mean?

For a process-color-only example, add the cyan, magenta, yellow, and black percentages at the location being evaluated. Adobe describes Total Area Coverage and directs users to obtain the limit from their print provider. The figure is not the average coverage of the page or the fraction of the package that looks dark. [1]

This distinction matters when a small image sits in a large white area. The surrounding blank space does not automatically justify a high value inside a shadow: the assessment concerns that location rather than distributing its colorants across the carton area. Equally, a warning at one location does not prove that every color in the design needs adjustment.

A three-point educational calculation

Assume that the fictional supplier has specified 270% for this particular job. The number was chosen for the example; it is not a packaging recommendation or a claimed property of any real ICC profile. Three imaginary locations in the chocolate image have the following process-color percentages. First understand the arithmetic, then decide which production question to ask.

Hypothetical values for practice, not measurements from production artwork
LocationCMYKTotalAgainst the hypothetical limit
A: deep shadow80%70%60%90%300%30 percentage points above
B: middle detail50%45%40%95%230%Below the limit
C: dark edge70%65%55%80%270%Numerically equal to the limit

For location A, 80 + 70 + 60 + 90 = 300. Its difference from the stated limit is 300 − 270 = 30 percentage points, not “thirty percent of the image.” Location C is not above the limit arithmetically, but that is not a quality certificate. Equality in a numerical example does not test the other requirements of production.

The practical conclusion is not “reduce everything by thirty.” Establish why A has those values, how the image was prepared, and whether its output target matches the printer’s approved target. A flagged location belonging to another object might need a different treatment. Local diagnosis avoids changing unaffected elements merely because the document has received a warning.

Use the job’s limit, not a borrowed one

Request the limit alongside the printing method, material, approved profile, and any color preparation that the supplier will perform. “We do all files this way” is incomplete unless it clearly refers to this package. If the limit and ICC profile arrive in separate messages, ask whether they describe the same intended condition instead of assuming that one instruction overrides the other.

ECI publishes profiles for specified printing conditions rather than a single profile for all uses. This supports reading the supplied description instead of choosing a familiar name for any package. This article does not assign approved ink limits to ECI profiles or assume that an offset profile automatically describes flexible film printing. [2]

Inspect coverage in the delivery PDF

Acrobat Output Preview can highlight areas exceeding a selected Total Area Coverage threshold. Changing the warning threshold changes the inspection, not the document’s colors. Record the threshold and simulation setup so another reviewer can understand what was actually tested. [1]

In our example, revisit the three locations and then inspect related areas: the image shadow, its neighboring gradient, and any large dark background. Do not stop because one point no longer carries a warning after an edit. Review the affected area and the other pages or sizes that reuse the same asset. An updated image may have been replaced in one size while an older version remains elsewhere.

Why not subtract blindly from every channel?

Subtracting a fixed amount from each channel changes the color description, not merely an independent total. It could produce a lower sum while weakening the distinction between the chocolate surface and its shadow. The first question should therefore concern the color-preparation route and the source available for reprocessing. After treatment, review appearance as well as the numeric condition rather than treating disappearance of the warning as the end of the job.

Moving already prepared CMYK content between printing conditions can call for a more specific transformation. ICC describes DeviceLink profiles for particular source-and-destination relationships, including possible preservation of black in CMYK-to-CMYK conversions. This is a question to discuss with prepress, not permission to download an arbitrary DeviceLink and apply it to any file. [3]

Retain the source before processing and record the reason, settings, and responsible approver. Do not reprocess the file and then convert it again at export without understanding what will happen to the resulting values. The point is not to prohibit every later conversion; it is to avoid an unintended, undocumented one that makes an earlier inspection report unrepresentative of the delivery file.

A before-and-after record

Create a compact record with a point identifier, location description, channel percentages, total, file version, and output target. After processing, inspect the same locations in the same way and record the actual new values. Do not populate an “after” column with desirable invented numbers. A conversion result is read from the resulting file, not assumed to make a table look complete.

Keep visual observations in a separate field. Is the chocolate texture still understandable? Is the edge distinguishable from the background? Does the product name remain clear? These are proposed review questions, not outcomes of tests performed here. A file can satisfy the coverage criterion while becoming less appropriate visually, or look convincing while still requiring technical work.

White, varnish, and additional separations

The calculation deliberately covers CMYK only. For a job involving white, varnish, or additional colorants, do not apply a process-color limit to every layer without the supplier’s interpretation. Ask what the limit includes and how the other layers will be evaluated. A defined inspection is more useful than an ambiguous total combining materials with different production functions.

Likewise, do not convert a special color into process solely to simplify the report; that may contradict another production decision. Clarity comes from stating the scope: “Process-color total inspected under the following setup,” then listing the remaining special-layer checks. One number is not expected to summarize every property of the package.

The delivery decision

Provide a reviewable result: the approved limit and its source, the inspected file, the corrected regions, the settings used, and the items still requiring a proof or printer confirmation. “Ink is fixed” is misleading when the only action was changing a warning field. Identifying a problem, treating it, and checking the treatment are separate steps.

The supplier specification helps turn review into clear decisions within FargPack’s packaging design and print-preparation services. When using the contact page, include the requested profile and limit where available. The task does not need one universal black recipe; it needs a known target and a documented inspection.
