When the client asks for a glossy product name, glossy illustration, and glossy background, ask what the finish will emphasize if every element receives the same attention. Spot UV packaging artwork is not another decorative color to apply everywhere. It is a selection of areas serving an explicit visual purpose. Begin with the product name and reading order, then convert the decision into an independent mask that the supplier can interpret without relying on simulated shine.
Define the selective varnish, not an imagined glow
PrintNinja describes Spot UV as selectively applied varnish cured with ultraviolet light to produce a glossy effect. The decision concerns a coating in selected locations, not a lamp within the package or a metallic replacement for foil. Use the preview to identify the finish areas without adding a glow that implies an unrequested product property. Approval concerns placement and appearance on a sample, not a fictional lighting effect. [1]
Record the finish as the supplier describes it, including whether the request concerns an ordinary surface effect or another proposed treatment with different properties. Do not assume the words Spot UV specify a particular raised height. If the supplier offers a tactile or raised version, request its specification and sample as a separate decision. This guide assigns no coating thickness, operating method, or food-contact suitability because the necessary product and manufacturing information is unavailable.
Map attention before mapping gloss
Propose a short design review of the front panel without finishing effects. What information should be read first? Which element explains the product? Which areas should remain quiet? Record a concrete answer before drawing the mask. If the name is weak in the ordinary printed version, varnish is not a promise that readability will improve from every angle. Resolve composition and contrast first, then investigate what the finish contributes.
Leaving an area unvarnished can be deliberate rather than a missed opportunity. The panel is not a competition to make every object shine. Ask each coated element to serve a purpose: emphasize a focal point, create a visual texture, or follow the main illustration. If its only explanation is “to look more premium,” present a quieter alternative for comparison without claiming that either version guarantees a commercial result.
A chocolate carton with five kinds of area
This hypothetical example is not a client project or a print trial performed by FargPack. The carton contains a clear product name, a cocoa-pod illustration, small information, a functional code, and a glue area. The proposed finish should support the main illustration without competing with information. Identify regions A through E on the review sheet only; these are explanatory references, not elements intended to appear on the printed package.
| Region | Role | Trial proposal | Decision limit |
|---|---|---|---|
| A: cocoa-pod illustration | Main visual element | Varnish on a simplified version of the shape | Supplier sample required before approval |
| B: product name | First reading priority | Compare with and without varnish | Resolve through an appropriate readability check |
| C: small information | Information that should remain available | Exclude from the decoration trial | Any change requires content review |
| D: functional code | A function separate from decoration | No added finish in this trial | Later changes require functional evaluation |
| E: glue area | Part of the carton construction | Follow the supplier’s exclusion zone | Not a space to estimate visually |
The map does not claim that varnish is always prohibited over a name or a code. It defines the proposed trial and prevents an unreviewed finish from being added to a functional region. Candidate one includes A; candidate two adds B. Keep the name’s color, size, and position unchanged between candidates. Otherwise, a difference in readability cannot readily be associated with the varnish decision rather than another design change.
During comparison, ask the reader to identify the product name and the first element noticed. Record the viewing context and observations without inventing a general success percentage. A small set of comments may reveal a question worth testing further, but it does not establish the behavior of an entire audience. Do not describe increased attention as a measured result unless the actual method, sample, and limitations are identified.
A black mask is not additional black printing
PrintNinja’s guide describes a workflow requiring complete printed artwork and a separate solid-black mask for varnished areas, with the artwork remaining beneath the coating. This illustrates why the product name should not disappear from print merely because it also appears in the varnish mask. It does not require every manufacturer to accept the same two-file construction. Confirm the actual receiver’s format, naming, and separation requirements. [2]
In the source document, isolate the intended varnish shape and preserve its coordinates and scale relative to the base artwork. If the supplier chooses a dedicated PDF separation, configure it according to their agreement and inspect the export. Naming a layer SPOT_UV does not demonstrate that the correct separation exists. Adobe documents the different roles of process and spot swatches: choosing a type belongs to a production setup whose result must be checked, not merely to visual file organization. [3]
The mask should contain the intended boundaries, not mockup reflections or shadows. For an agreed ordinary binary mask, do not use a gradient to imply a thickness transition or 50% opacity to mean half the height. Those interpretations require a different technical agreement if the supplier supports them at all. Both parties need to read the shape in the same way. An attractive presentation does not compensate for ambiguous production instructions.
Keep the composite preview, where an identifying color may indicate the finish, separate from the production deliverable. State the identifying color’s function so it does not become an unintended extra ink. A small region list can specify that A belongs inside the mask while C stays outside. This becomes useful after content revisions, allowing a designer to compare explicit regional decisions rather than remember the appearance of an older layer.
Clearance is a supplier-specific question
Ask the manufacturer to identify requirements around edges, folds, glue areas, and fine details for the actual substrate and finish. Do not borrow a general number from an unrelated template. Record the source and revision of the specification and tie any exception to explicit approval. Recheck the mask after a dieline or glue-area change even when the product name and illustration remain unchanged. The shape must agree with the current construction, not a previous version of the carton.
If the design requires close alignment to a printed boundary, present that relationship for a separate supplier sample. The designer may propose a simpler inset shape or an intentional separation, but any reduction or compensation must follow the production agreement rather than a universal automatic command. Do not present a smaller mask as a guaranteed registration solution. It can change the intended appearance and require another visual approval.
Approve appearance and function separately
When a sample is available, inspect the effect through appropriate viewing positions, check that the name and information remain clear, and compare the finish with the agreed locations. State whether the sample represents the final material and treatment or merely an explanatory model. If adhesion, rubbing, or code performance needs evaluation, request an appropriate test from the responsible party. Looking at a sample cannot establish that every product requirement has been tested.
Complete the handoff with the print filename, mask, composite reference, material specification, and approval status. This proposed map can accompany FargPack packaging projects; a discussion of finishing requirements should begin with the supplier’s specification. From a design perspective, successful selective varnish is not necessarily the largest coated area. It is a finish with an identifiable purpose, a file that defines it, and a sample that supports an appropriately limited review.
