Two artwork files can display a similar brand colour on screen while requiring very different production arrangements. One may use process colour throughout; the other may contain an additional spot separation. Deciding when to use spot colours in packaging starts with the intended output and the printer's specification. Picking an attractive swatch is only one part of that decision.
This guide helps packaging designers discuss colour with their print supplier and organise a document that combines photography, a brand colour and a separate finish. The examples are educational. Ink systems and output workflows vary, so confirm the requirements for the actual substrate, press and job before preparing final artwork.
Understand what the colour type describes
Adobe distinguishes spot colours, traditionally printed with a dedicated premixed ink, from process colours built from the process inks. In conventional four-colour printing, those process inks are cyan, magenta, yellow and black. A project can use both approaches: a photograph in process colour and selected graphic elements in a spot colour. The screen appearance is a simulation, not a physical sample of the ink on the packaging material.
Digital output may interpret a named spot colour differently according to the device and its configuration. Ask what the printer will actually do with the colour in your file. Choosing Spot in the application does not prove that a separate ink will be used. Equally, converting it to CMYK does not guarantee that the resulting appearance will match an approved sample.
Start with each element's purpose
List the main elements in the job: photograph, text, background, logo and production or finishing layers. Decide what colour is doing in each element. Is it describing detail within a photograph, identifying the brand, or marking a separate manufacturing operation? This simple inventory prevents a blanket conversion from changing elements that serve different purposes.
For a practice carton, imagine a product photograph, a turquoise panel and a spot varnish. Discuss how each should be output before building the final file. Do not name the varnish swatch after the brand colour, even if you use turquoise to make the varnish visible on screen. Its function is different. Separating those meanings makes the artwork easier for the next person to inspect.
Write a specification both parties can use
Ask the supplier to confirm the colour reference, substrate, approval method and required separation names. “Match the logo” is not a useful specification if the only logo supplied is a compressed image. The team needs an identifiable reference and an understanding of whether the job calls for a simulation, a dedicated ink or a preliminary print test.
Record the agreement beside the production files. A note such as “brand colour to follow the printer-approved sample” needs the sample's actual identifier and approval status to be useful. Do not invent a library number because it looks close on your display. If the supplier changes, reconfirm the reference. The designer communicates and organises the intended result; production approval also requires information from the supplier who will make it.
Organise swatches by meaning
Review swatch names and colour types before export. Imported artwork can introduce two differently named swatches for what should be one colour. It can also introduce an unexpected spot colour in an element intended for process printing. Keep a list of approved names, then check their use across every face of the package, including less prominent side and back panels.
Do not merge swatches merely because they look alike. One may represent a brand colour and the other a finish, or their difference may be intentional. Inspect the element, its source and its purpose before consolidating anything. This matters when a document combines logos and illustrations from several files or reuses a template from an earlier project.
Inspect behaviour rather than trusting names
A swatch named “Spot” is not necessarily configured as a spot colour. A layer named “CMYK” does not prove that all its contents separate as expected. Inspect swatch properties and use the appropriate separation preview tools. The aim is to make the document's actual structure agree with the written specification, rather than simply making the layer names look tidy.
In the carton exercise, write your expectation before opening the output preview: which elements should appear on the special separation, and which should disappear when it is disabled? Compare that expectation with the exported file. If small text unexpectedly appears on a finishing separation, record its location and correct the source artwork. A verbal instruction to ignore it leaves unnecessary ambiguity in production.
Test transparency and sensitive overlaps
Adobe notes that spot colours interacting with transparency can behave unexpectedly in some conversion or export workflows. This is a reason to inspect the output, not a reason to convert every spot colour to process. Agree the required delivery format with the supplier, then review shadows, blending effects, gradients and overlapping objects after export.
Choose a few sensitive areas for closer inspection: a logo over a photograph, a gradient in a coloured panel, or an element crossing the edge of a finish. Inspect them enlarged and at their intended physical size. Magnification can reveal an unexpected separation, while an actual-size review can expose text or details that are difficult to read. Technical and visual checks answer different questions and both are useful.
Compare costs for the complete job
In conventional printing, an extra spot colour can require another separation and additional preparation. That does not produce a universal cost rule. Run length, material, coverage, finishing and press arrangements all influence a quotation. Ask the supplier to compare two workable options for the same job, including the expected visual difference and the proposed approval process.
Avoid promising that fewer colours will always make a project cheaper or that a special ink will automatically improve it. Explain the function each option serves and whether the difference matters for this product. If the distinction is unnoticeable in the intended use, review the expense. If colour is a critical recognition cue, a more carefully controlled approval process may be justified.
Close the decision with a sample and a record
Before handoff, assemble the colour specification, approved swatch names, expected separations, production file, readable preview and approval record. Use an unambiguous version name instead of distributing several files labelled final. When a colour changes after review, check the export again; the earlier approval does not automatically cover the new file.
A useful handoff question is whether another designer could identify the intended inks and finishes without hearing your explanation. If the answer depends on remembering a conversation, add the missing information to the delivery note. Spot colour is valuable when it serves an agreed production purpose. Its presence in a file is not, by itself, evidence of a better or more accurate package.
