فرق حاسم: Assign Profile أم Convert to Profile؟

A photographer supplies a mint-leaf image in RGB while the carton manufacturer expects a defined print file. Two tempting shortcuts are changing the document mode immediately or increasing green saturation until it resembles a phone display. RGB-to-CMYK conversion for packaging should begin elsewhere: establish the source color description, the intended printing condition, and who is responsible for the conversion.
Retain the original image and its color information, obtain the supplier specification, prepare an output-specific version, and review it under appropriate simulation conditions. Do not promise an absolute match between a screen and a material. The hypothetical mint-tea example below organizes that decision and distinguishes a file-setup problem from an appearance difference requiring informed visual approval.
RGB and CMYK are not just sets of numbers
Adobe explains that devices and color spaces differ in the ranges they can represent. A screen color may fall outside the intended print gamut, and transferring colors between spaces can change their appearance. Identical numbers do not establish identical appearance without the color space that interprets them. [1]
Consequently, “make the green match the picture” is insufficient when the picture has circulated through several screenshots. Establish a traceable reference: a known photographic original, an approved color sample, or a proof accepted under defined conditions. Do not select a new reference every time a different phone makes a version look more attractive. Otherwise, the designer is chasing a target that changes during the project.
Before converting RGB to CMYK for packaging
Make a small inventory. Our hypothetical tea carton contains a plant photograph, a principal brand color, information text, and a light area. Do not assume that every element needs identical treatment. Record which asset is an RGB photograph with an embedded profile, which is a color defined in the artwork, and which is governed by a separate specification. The purpose is to understand the file before running an operation across elements of uncertain origin.
Ask the supplier to identify the output condition and whether it accepts color-managed RGB content or requires prepared CMYK. If the manufacturer will perform conversion within its workflow, do not pre-convert merely because the filename contains “print.” If conversion is your responsibility, record the destination and settings. Naming the broad printing process does not answer every color-management question.
The crucial distinction: Assign Profile or Convert to Profile?
Photoshop documentation distinguishes assigning a profile, which changes the interpretation without changing the values, from converting to a profile, which recalculates colors for the destination. Do not substitute assignment for conversion to obtain an attractive temporary preview. The operation should address an understood color condition rather than simply produce a pleasing screen result. [2]
If the photographer’s source carries a trusted profile, retain that description and prepare the output version for the agreed target. If the file is untagged and the original can be recovered, ask the photographer before guessing. Sometimes the history cannot be recovered. In that case, document the assumption and review its consequence rather than presenting it as information read from a file that never contained it.
Preserving the original matters because a later request could involve another printing condition or a separate screen version. Do not leave the project with only one file that has passed through undocumented edits. Use clear names for the photographic original, the output-specific asset, and the version placed in the layout. A particular step can then be revisited without reconstructing its history from memory.
The mint example: define what must remain understandable
Before comparing versions, set three hypothetical design goals: distinguish the leaf edge from the background, keep its veins visible in the dark region, and maintain sufficient visual separation between the brand color and the photograph to support the hierarchy. We are not reporting measured color differences or instrument tests. These are review questions the team can apply to an identified version.
Propose an initial output version without additional cosmetic adjustment and inspect it against those goals. If the leaf becomes less saturated but remains readable and appropriate to the product, the decision might be to accept the print appearance after proofing rather than intensify every color. If particular details disappear, discuss a targeted image adjustment while retaining a recoverable original.
The comparison does not suggest that tea packaging requires vivid green to work. It separates an artistic preference from a production condition. The team may deliberately choose a restrained appearance, but it should know whether that was an intentional decision or the consequence of an incorrectly interpreted source. Understanding the reason is more useful than defending a version because it happened to arrive first.
Use a soft proof to answer a specific question
Photoshop’s Proof Setup can simulate an output condition on screen. Adobe notes that reliability depends on the monitor, relevant profiles, and surrounding lighting. A screenshot is therefore not a print guarantee, and a soft proof does not establish that the actual material or finish has been tested. [3]
Use the simulation to compare the three details identified in the example, rather than making a vague judgment about “green quality.” Record the setup so a colleague does not compare another simulation and mistake the difference for an artwork change. A marked-up image can explain the affected region, provided it does not silently become an approved color reference in its own right.
Explain differences without promising the impossible
A useful explanation is: “This version is prepared for the supplier’s stated output target. We are checking the leaf detail and its relationship to the brand color; final appearance will be approved through the agreed proof.” Avoid claiming that conversion has made the print exactly identical to the screen. The first statement describes completed work and its limits; the second claims an outcome that has not been demonstrated.
Discuss differences connected to decisions: a detail that becomes less visible, a colored area that needs stronger separation, or a photograph that now supports neighboring text more effectively. Do not present two displays with unknown settings as a print test. Where opinions differ, return to the agreed reference and the functional objective rather than the device belonging to the loudest person in the meeting.
Do not treat the brand color like the plant photograph
A brand color may have its own sample or specification, whereas the photograph contains many tones. Keep their approval routes separate. In the mint example, changing the principal brand color is not automatically justified because one leaf needs adjustment. Nor should a converted RGB value be presented as a permanent color specification for every substrate.
Where the agreement includes a special ink, ask how it should be retained in delivery rather than converting it automatically. Where the job is process-only, use its appropriate reference and acceptance conditions. This is not an instruction for producing an industrial color standard; it is a way to keep different decisions from becoming indistinguishable under the label “color correction.”
Close the loop at the delivery file
Once the output asset is placed in the layout, confirm that it is actually the version in use and that an older image link has not remained. Review export settings for unintended further conversion. If the supplier is expected to perform another transformation, document it. The objective is defined responsibility for each step, not a blanket slogan forbidding all additional conversion regardless of the workflow.
Close the project record with the original asset and its known color description, the output target, consequential settings, the placed image version, and the distinction between visual approvals and outstanding proofing. “Converted to CMYK” is too vague. A useful record explains how, for which destination, and which result was inspected.
For work combining imagery, identity, and print preparation, FargPack’s website explains the design scope. When contacting the studio, supply the original asset and supplier specification rather than only a screenshot. A reliable conversion starts with traceable information and ends with an approval whose limits are understood.
