A supplier requests “reverse printing.” The designer mirrors the artwork, sends it, and receives a proof that reads from the wrong side. The ambiguity can begin with the term itself: knockout, mirror and subsurface printing are all meanings listed under reverse printing in Label Planet's glossary. [1] Start by defining the viewing side and label construction, not by clicking a reflection tool.

A reverse printed transparent label needs three distinct references: a consumer-readable view, a supplier-approved layer map and a statement naming who performs reflection at which stage. Do not assume every file must be delivered mirrored. This article develops a job card for a fictional label; it does not validate a material, adhesive or ink for any particular product.

Define the observer before arranging layers

Label Planet describes subsurface label printing as placing print behind a transparent face material, with adhesive on the printed side. [2] Mirror printing describes a geometric reversal that allows correct reading through a transparent surface from the opposite side. [3] One describes construction and the other orientation. They can occur together without meaning the same thing.

Begin the card with a complete sentence: “The reader stands in front of the transparent label face on the package and reads the artwork through the face material.” Ask the supplier to confirm that this matches the intended product. Avoid “front” and “back” without a reference; a designer may mean the package front while a technician means a side of the web in production.

Mark the observer's direction on a review reference and separately identify viewing face, print face and adhesive side. Do not add a direction arrow to final artwork unless it belongs there intentionally. The reference prevents misunderstanding; it is not decorative print or an unverified product-use instruction.

A layer card, not a manufacturing recipe

Consider a fictional bottle label with a colored name, an image and an area intended to remain transparent. For discussion with the supplier, propose this reader-to-container sequence: transparent face material, color image, selective white behind identified areas, an adhesive layer and the container surface. The construction is not approved until the manufacturer confirms it for the project.

Hypothetical viewing order requiring supplier approval, not press-station order
From the observerProposed componentQuestion to resolve
1Transparent face materialWhich side faces the reader after application?
2Color imageHow does it become correctly readable?
3Selective whiteWhich areas have white, and which remain open?
4Proposed adhesive layerDoes the manufacturer confirm suitability?
5Container surfaceWhat actual color and material sit behind the window?

This table describes what the viewer encounters. It does not decide which station prints first, how ink dries or how a surface is prepared. Those are manufacturing details. Update the card if the supplier proposes another layer or construction. A visually attractive exploded mockup is not grounds for imposing an unsupported sequence on production.

Map white separately from the word “transparent”

Divide the example into three intended areas: a name backed by white, an image whose appearance over white needs review, and a window that white must not cover. State each purpose and ask the supplier to identify the separation and its interpretation. A white-looking object on an artwork layer does not automatically define an appropriate production separation.

Review mask boundaries from the final viewing side and from the explicitly named print side. Does the intended window remain a window? Is white behind the intended region rather than in front of it in the interpreted construction? The exercise specifies no opacity percentage, ink thickness or mask inset. Those require supplier data and suitable testing.

Do not promise that a bottle mockup reproduces the appearance through the actual label and contents. Treat transparent regions as a separate sample-review item and document the container color or background used. When the application background changes, revisit the earlier acceptance scope instead of assuming the word “clear” settled the appearance.

Assign reflection to one party

Adobe describes Reflect as reflecting objects around an axis. [4] Tool availability does not establish that the designer must use it for every reverse-print job. First agree whether the supplier expects right-reading artwork for downstream processing or an already mirrored production file with a specified orientation. Put the answer in the version name and handoff card.

Always retain a right-reading client reference. When a mirrored file is requested, apply the orientation treatment in a separate production version relative to the agreed geometric reference. Do not reverse the character sequence or rewrite Arabic letters in reverse order. The requirement is a transformation of the graphic construction, preserving its internal relationships, not broken language. Inspect it from the designated viewing face.

Watch for a second reflection in export settings or the supplier's workflow. Give the card separate fields for “state of delivered artwork” and “processing required from supplier.” A single “Reverse: yes” field cannot tell the next person whether reversal has happened or remains to be done. An explanation isolated in another email is also easy to lose.

An orientation test using asymmetric content

For a review margin outside production, propose an asymmetric marker combining “A7,” the Arabic word “يمين” and an arrow. Check it from the specified observer position alongside the actual project wording in both languages. A circle or symmetrical ornament may not reveal a reversal, so do not make it the only orientation test.

A paper model or explained orientation preview can test understanding of direction. Label it as such, not as evidence of adhesion or material performance. Request a specimen of the actual construction where required for approval. Record whether the wording reads correctly, the arrow points in the intended direction and the image's relationship to the window matches the reading reference.

Check the white mask and cutting outline against the coordinate reference agreed with the supplier. Do not move one object independently after reflecting the rest. If the manufacturer requires a cutting outline to remain fixed, document how mirrored artwork aligns with it. There is no blanket rule here to reflect every technical line or leave all of them unchanged; the correct handoff definition determines treatment.

Keep both reference views clearly labeled when sending a comparison. A perfectly correct print-side view can look wrong to someone expecting the reader side. Labeling prevents that person from “correcting” a file that was already prepared as requested. A version identifier should connect each view to the same underlying artwork revision.

A front-adhesive window sticker is a different case

Sticker Mule describes front-adhesive stickers applied inside windows and read from outside. [5] This is a separate example showing why adhesive location and observer position matter. It does not imply that all reverse printing uses front adhesive or that our bottle-label example can be installed in the same manner.

When changing applications, ask which surface receives the adhesive, where the reader stands and whether another transparent layer lies between them. Rebuild the card using those answers. Transferring window-sticker settings to a package label merely because both are clear is exactly the shortcut this process is intended to prevent.

A handoff that resolves the ambiguity

The proposed package contains a right-reading reference, a production file with an explicit orientation state, a confirmed layer map, a white map where required and either a sample or an unresolved verification item. Add the revision identifier. Do not attribute approval or durability testing to this teaching construction.

Organize the handoff within a FargPack label design assignment and share the supplier's requirements through the contact page. When the viewing face is understood before the first reflection, the discussion concerns a specific file and known construction rather than competing interpretations of a single word.
