Healing Brush.

Tripod.

  • Scrim.
  • Diffusion panel.
  • Light tent

LED studio lights

Reflection.

Retouch

Retouch:

Tripod head.

Edge light.

  • Exposure
  • Exposure

Neon.

Flexible pouch

  • Strip lights.
Highlight.
  • Rim light.

Flag.

Channel clipping

  • Histogram.
  • Highlight warning.

Moiré.
Edge halo.

  • Detail shot:
  • Macro:

Google Merchant Center

Photoshop.

Workflow

  6. إضافة Fill أو Flag.
Polarizer.
Main.
Finish detail.

  • Camera height.
  • Focal length.
  • Distance.
  • Light distance.
  • Angle.
  • Exposure.
  • White balance.

Reflective packaging is difficult not simply because it “reflects light,” but because it reflects the entire studio: softboxes, camera, photographer, table, walls, flags, and sometimes the doorway. When a glossy bottle also carries small text, foil, or a shiny label, one strong white reflection can cross the most important copy and make it unreadable.

The goal is not to remove every reflection. If you do that, a glossy bottle can lose material character and foil can begin to look like flat yellow ink. The better goal is to create intentional reflections that describe form and finish while preserving label legibility.

Understand what the camera sees before moving the light

On a glossy surface, the camera often sees an image of the light source reflected in the subject. Changing the softbox size, distance, or angle therefore changes the highlight shape itself.

A large nearby source creates a large, relatively soft-edged reflection. A smaller source produces a tighter, harder reflection. On a cylindrical bottle, the source may appear as a vertical stripe. On a flexible metallic pouch, every wrinkle can break that reflection into smaller shapes.

Before asking, “Is the light too bright?” ask:

  • Where is the source reflected?
  • How wide is the reflection?
  • Does it cross the label?
  • Does it describe curvature?
  • Is it revealing or hiding the finish?

That way of thinking is more useful than memorizing one lighting recipe.

Start with a perfectly prepared surface

Glossy packaging magnifies:

  • fingerprints
  • dust
  • micro-scratches
  • adhesive residue
  • label bubbles
  • cut edges
  • liquid spots

Adobe’s product-photography guidance recommends cleaning and preparing products before shooting because small defects can create large retouching workloads later.

Use appropriate gloves or handle the product from hidden areas. Use cleaning products that are safe for the actual surface. Do not assume glass cleaner is suitable for every coating or printed finish.

A clean image begins before Photoshop.

Use a large source to create a controllable highlight

A practical starting setup:

  • simple background
  • camera on tripod
  • large softbox on one side
  • white or black card on the opposite side
  • restrained fill when needed

Instead of pointing light directly at the label, move the source until its reflection falls:

  • near the package edge
  • in an empty graphic area
  • as a narrow strip that describes the form without crossing critical copy

A large source does not mean “no reflection.” It creates a bigger reflection that is often easier to shape.

Diffusion turns a point into a surface

Useful tools include:

  • scrims
  • diffusion panels
  • appropriate photographic diffusion material
  • light tents for some products

The goal is to make the product “see” a large luminous area rather than a tiny LED emitter.

A light tent is not always the answer. On highly reflective metal, surrounding the subject with white can make the object look flat and pale. Black cards may then be necessary to create dark reflected lines that define the edges.

In reflective photography, black is also a shaping tool because it appears as a dark reflection.

A black flag can matter more than another light

Place a black foam board outside the frame near the product. You will often see a dark line appear on glass or metal. Move the board until that line describes an edge.

You can use:

  • two black side flags
  • a narrow black strip
  • a white card opposite a black one

This is effectively drawing the product using reflected environments.

Do not let the black reflection consume dark label copy. If black typography disappears into the dark strip, change the flag position or camera angle.

Polarizers are powerful, but they are not a universal “remove shine” button

Nikon explains that circular polarizing filters can reduce or remove certain unwanted reflections, including glare from glass and water, and that rotating the filter changes its effect. Nikon also notes that polarizers reduce the amount of light reaching the camera, requiring exposure compensation.

On glass and many non-metallic glossy surfaces, a polarizer can significantly reduce certain reflections. The effect depends on geometry, material, and light direction.

Do not assume it will remove every reflection from metallic foil or polished metal. Metallic reflection behaves differently, and geometric control with sources and flags is often more important.

Cross-polarization for aggressive hot-spot reduction

Edmund Optics documents cross-polarization techniques used in imaging: polarizing material is placed on the light source and another polarizer is placed in front of the lens. The relative orientation can strongly reduce specular hot spots.

This can be helpful when:

  • the label is extremely glossy
  • glare covers important typography
  • you need to inspect printing beneath a reflective coating

But it has trade-offs:

  • light loss
  • additional equipment
  • potential removal of attractive material highlights
  • different effectiveness across materials

A commercial workflow may therefore capture:

  1. a legibility-focused exposure
  2. a finish-focused exposure

Those can be used separately or blended carefully where appropriate, without creating a material appearance that the real package never has.

Keep polarizing material away from unsafe heat

Polarizing films and diffusion materials have thermal limits. Do not place them close to hot lamps unless the material and fixture are rated for that setup.

Modern LED studio lighting can make thermal management easier, but safe distances and manufacturer guidance still matter.

No reflection problem is worth a damaged filter or fire risk.

Camera angle can solve a problem faster than retouching

Moving the camera or product only a few degrees can move a reflection away from a line of text.

Before opening Photoshop:

  • move camera slightly
  • rotate product
  • move source
  • change source height
  • adjust the white card

For catalog work, record those positions so every SKU does not end up at a different angle.

Use marks on the tabletop and tripod head.

Example: glossy-label olive oil bottle

Problem: A left-side softbox creates a white vertical stripe directly over the product name.

Educational adjustment:

  1. Move the softbox farther behind the bottle.
  2. Rotate the bottle four degrees.
  3. Add a narrow white card toward camera for edge information.
  4. Place a black flag away from the label to define the opposite contour.
  5. Use partial polarization rather than maximum suppression.

Result: The bottle retains a highlight that communicates gloss, but the name remains readable.

This is an example, not a universal recipe.

Example: gold-foil carton

If you eliminate every specular response, the foil can look like dull brown-yellow printing.

Start with a broad side source, then rotate the carton until the foil catches a controlled highlight. You may capture:

  • one exposure optimized for typography
  • one optimized for foil character

If compositing, avoid making the foil glow unrealistically from every viewing angle. The goal is to communicate that the area is metallic, not neon.

Flexible glossy pouches add wrinkle complexity

Flexible pouches create many small reflective angles.

Before lighting:

  • fill the pouch with a realistic dummy volume
  • remove unnatural creases
  • preserve believable material behavior
  • stabilize the base

Use a larger source to reduce harsh transitions between small reflective facets.

Do not retouch every wrinkle out if real production pouches will retain some natural creasing. Ecommerce photography should still describe the material honestly.

Black glossy packages need reflected shape

A black glossy bottle can disappear against a dark background. You often need highlights at the edges.

Useful tools:

  • strip lights
  • long white cards
  • black flags shaping those strips
  • subtle rim lighting

White typography or foil may require a separate exposure.

Do not simply raise shadow levels until black becomes gray. Preserve the product color and reveal the form through reflection.

White text on a glossy surface creates the opposite problem

Sometimes the text is white and the reflection is white, so the letters disappear.

Possible solution:

  • create a darker reflected field behind the text with a black flag
  • move the main reflection away from that zone
  • keep a bright highlight on the package edge

This demonstrates the real goal: local contrast management, not global reflection removal.

Use the histogram, but also monitor channel clipping

Foil or white highlights can clip one or more RGB channels.

Check:

  • histogram
  • highlight warnings
  • RGB values in tethered capture when useful

Do not impose an arbitrary rule that every specular highlight must remain below a certain value. A specular highlight can legitimately reach white. The important issue is whether critical color or typography is lost.

Tethering helps catch problems before the set is dismantled

Reflective packaging benefits enormously from large-screen review.

Check:

  • focus
  • label readability
  • dust
  • moiré
  • edge halos
  • foil reflection
  • surface scratches
  • color

A problem noticed on a 27-inch tethered display is easier to solve while the product is still in position than after fifty SKUs have been photographed.

The ecommerce main image and beauty image should be different jobs

For an ecommerce set:

  • Main: clear and honest, label readable
  • Detail: show gloss, foil, emboss, or surface
  • Lifestyle: allow more dramatic reflections
  • Macro: reveal finishing technique

Do not force one image to perform all four jobs.

Google Merchant Center, for example, restricts promotional elements in main product images and expects accurate product representation. Use secondary imagery to celebrate finish and atmosphere.

Retouch to clean, not to rebuild the product

Typical commercial cleanup can include:

  • dust removal
  • correcting an accidental scratch that is not representative of a good unit
  • background cleanup
  • color correction
  • careful exposure blending

Be cautious about:

  • changing bottle geometry
  • fixing a production label alignment issue that all shipped units will have
  • deleting a visible seam
  • making matte packaging glossy
  • rebuilding unreadable label text instead of reshooting

If glare hides the brand name in the raw photograph, the best fix is usually a lighting fix.

A practical ten-step workflow

  1. Clean the product.
  2. Lock the camera on a tripod.
  3. Establish a simple background.
  4. Use one large source.
  5. Observe its reflection on the package.
  6. Add a fill card or black flag.
  7. Test a polarizer.
  8. Capture the clear main frame.
  9. Modify lighting for finish detail.
  10. Review tethered before swapping SKU.

After the first product, record:

  • camera height
  • focal length
  • distance
  • light distance
  • light angle
  • exposure
  • white balance

That preserves catalog consistency.

Final takeaway

Reflective packaging photography succeeds when reflections are treated as design elements rather than defects to erase. Use large sources, diffusion, white and black cards, controlled angles, and polarization when it helps. Keep enough highlight to describe gloss and foil, but never allow it to erase critical copy. If you need one frame for legibility and another for the finish, that is often more honest and useful than forcing one image to solve two conflicting visual goals.
