A rectangle can look like the easiest label shape: four sides and a regular area that divides neatly into rows and columns. Yet easy geometry does not guarantee easy reading. A product name may end up trapped between an oversized logo and a large illustration, while a tidy paragraph wraps out of sight around the bottle. Rectangular label design starts with the surface a person can actually see, then allocates information within it.
This exercise uses a fictional hand-wash label to compare landscape and portrait arrangements. It provides a decision process rather than a universal package size. Obtain the actual trim dimensions, material and production margins from the project’s supplier, and have the product owner approve the required copy before preparing the final artwork.
Identify the surface behind the rectangle
Measure the label area on a sample container or use the supplier’s approved drawing. Distinguish the bottle’s apparent front width from the surface available for application. A shoulder may begin curving before the edge that appears usable in a photograph. Apply a temporary paper strip and mark the front, sides and limits of the flat area.
If the label partially wraps around the container, its full width is not one visible front panel. Try the product name in the front-facing region and reserve a defined zone for information requiring the bottle to be turned. Do this before selecting typefaces: moving the name after the illustration is complete may require rebuilding the composition. Record whether the package is displayed standing, hanging or inside an outer carton.
Separate trim, bleed and content space
Trim defines the finished label shape. Bleed extends outside it where a background reaches the edge, while a safety area keeps important content away from the cut. These are different boundaries; increasing the finished size is not a substitute for adding bleed. Follow the supplier’s template and distinguish production guides from printed design elements.
For a calculation example only, assume a finished rectangle measuring 80 × 50 mm with an agreed exercise margin of 3 mm on each side. The resulting inner area is 74 × 44 mm. This does not guarantee that all copy will fit. It is the starting boundary for layout trials, and a particular element may need more space because of curvature or use conditions.
Build the grid around real copy
List the label’s jobs: identify the brand, name the product, distinguish the fragrance or variant, and present quantity and approved information. Beside each item, record the actual wording and the number of variations in the product range. A short placeholder cannot validate a grid intended for a long final name. The most demanding variant reveals the system’s limits.
For the hand-wash exercise, first try three vertical zones: brand at the top, product name in the middle, then fragrance and quantity below. Treat the botanical illustration as supporting material that can be reduced. Next, try a genuinely different layout with an image beside the text group. Compare how easily each communicates the product category, rather than selecting the version whose decoration fills more space.
When do two columns help?
Two columns may suit separate languages or two short information groups, but they do not automatically solve crowding. Within a 74 mm area, two equal columns separated by an assumed 4 mm gap each measure 35 mm wide. Test real copy at that width before committing to the division. Narrower lines can increase paragraph height as words move onto additional lines.
Compare the columns with two consecutive blocks using the full width. Record each alternative’s height with the same typeface and weight. If the difference is small, favour the arrangement that is easier to follow on the container. Alternating Arabic and English line by line also requires testing; repeated changes of reading direction can make the beginning and end of a group harder to locate.
Rethink the layout when changing orientation
Rotating the design area does not turn a successful landscape label into a successful portrait label. A wide rectangle supports elements side by side, while a tall one may need a stronger top-to-bottom sequence. Preserve the roles of brand, name and supporting information, then reposition them for the new shape. Do not simply squeeze the old composition into different dimensions.
Show both arrangements on the container at their actual available sizes. Portrait space may support a useful name treatment but approach the bottle’s shoulder. A landscape version may allow longer lines while hiding their ends around the sides. Make the trade-off between shape, reading and application explicit in the client presentation.
Review alignment and margins visually
Begin with shared alignment guides for related information. If the product name and explanatory line form one group, the spacing should communicate that relationship. Equal spacing between every object is not automatically useful. Two unrelated groups may need more separation than two lines where one explains the other.
After numerical alignment, inspect the balance at actual size. An asymmetric logo can appear displaced even when its bounding box is centred. Make a restrained, documented optical adjustment without stretching or redrawing the mark. For a border near the edge, discuss expected cutting variation with the supplier: a close border can make an uneven-looking gap more conspicuous.
Test text against the intended background
The botanical illustration in this exercise can occupy a generous area, but it should not compete with the descriptor’s characters. Print one alternative with a quiet area behind the text and another with the illustration separated to one side. Compare reading before selecting the treatment that looks most attractive when enlarged. A transparent material also requires a sample representing the bottle and contents, rather than a white screen background.
Review Arabic and English with a capable reader of each language. Ask them to identify the category, fragrance and quantity without an introductory explanation. Record the point of confusion rather than accepting a general statement that the design looks clear. This limited qualitative design test does not establish behaviour for every customer or demonstrate increased sales. It helps locate specific problems that can be revised and tested again.
Prepare an unambiguous approval sheet
Print the prototype at actual size with a measurement reference outside the label to detect page scaling. Attach it to the container and photograph the front and side. Record the finished dimensions, template revision, approved copy, reading direction and delivery filename on the review sheet. Keep the illustrative mockup separate from the production artwork; a mockup screenshot is not a print file.
- Match the document to the supplier’s template and the correct container version.
- Check edge-reaching backgrounds and their required extension.
- Test the longest name and largest copy block in the range.
- Inspect characters, numbers and their direction after exporting the print file.
- Confirm how the supplier expects template and safety guides to be handled.
- Retain an editable version separately from the approved production file.
Connect this sheet with the packaging design brief and review language arrangements using the Arabic and English label guide. The rectangle succeeds when every information group has a readable, workable place on the package, rather than when every empty area has been filled.
