Do not use abrasive cleaners.

Store between 5°C and 25°C

  • Washing.
  • Bleaching.
  • Drying.
  • Ironing.
  • Professional textile care.

Hang tag.

Pinterest.

Sketchbook

Code Instruction Mandatory? Standard symbol? Text required? Market
C01 Wipe with soft dry cloth No No Yes Global
C02 Keep away from open flame Safety Check applicable system Yes Market-specific
C03 Machine wash 30°C Yes/approved Textile standard As required EU/market

32×32 units.
  • Stroke
  • Corner radius.
  • Cap style.
  • Optical weight.
  • Filled vs outline.
  • Padding

Optical correction.

Wipe with a dry cloth

  • English

أو:

  • Legend

Bleach.

Custom set:

  1. Cloth icon — Wipe clean.
  2. Bleach bottle + slash — Do not use bleach.
  3. Washing machine + slash — Do not machine wash.
  4. Heat waves + distance — Keep away from direct heat.

Style.

Contrast.

  • Baseline.
Store upright.

  • ID.
  • Name.
  • Meaning.
  • Source.
  • Standard status.
  • License status.
  • Version.
  • Languages.
  • Minimum size.
  • Stroke.
  • Do not modify note.

CARE-TXT-ISO-WASH-30 Source: official licensed symbol Modify: No

و: CARE-CUSTOM-WIPE-DRY Source: brand custom Modify: design system only

Folder: Free Icons

Licensed / Care symbols / Do not modify

Certification mark.

Puzzle.

Workflow عملي

Standard / Regulatory / Custom.
Grayscale.

A small icon can save a lot of space, but it can also communicate the wrong instruction very efficiently. That is the real challenge in care-icon design. Some symbols are simply brand-created visual language, while others belong to a formal standard, regulatory framework, or protected trademark system.

If you treat both categories the same way, you may end up restyling a standardized symbol to “fit the brand” or creating a custom icon that accidentally looks like an official certification.

The first question is therefore not “Which stroke weight should we use?” It is: Is this symbol standardized, regulatory, licensed, or custom?

Divide care graphics into three categories before drawing

1. Standardized or protected symbols

Textile care symbols are a strong example.

ISO 3758:2023 establishes a graphic-symbol system for care labeling of textile articles. It covers washing, bleaching, drying, ironing, and professional textile care and is intended to communicate the most severe treatment that will not cause irreversible damage in the care process.

GINETEX, which co-owns the original care-symbol trademarks with COFREET, explains that the five care symbols are protected trademarks in many countries and that commercial use may require a license agreement and correct use according to the applicable guidelines.

This is not the place to redraw the washing tub with rounded corners because your brand uses rounded geometry.

2. Public information symbols

ISO 7001:2023 specifies registered public-information symbols. The standard notes that such symbols may be combined with text to improve comprehension, while also excluding safety signs and sectors governed by specific regulations.

If an official public-information symbol genuinely fits your use case, confirm the context and usage rights.

3. Brand-owned custom care icons

Examples include:

  • wipe with a soft cloth
  • store upright
  • close cap after use
  • return item to its pouch
  • use the included brush

These can be designed as part of the identity system, provided they describe approved product instructions.

Do not convert every sentence into a pictogram

Icons work well when an action is:

  • simple
  • visible
  • repeated
  • distinguishable in one small graphic

But some instructions need text.

Example: Do not use abrasive cleaners.

You can show a rough sponge with a slash, but “abrasive” can still be interpreted differently by different users. Text may be necessary.

Another example: Store between 5°C and 25°C.

The numeric range is the information. A thermometer icon can support it, but it cannot replace the numbers.

A useful rule: If misinterpretation can damage the product or harm the user, do not depend on an invented icon alone.

Textile care symbols show why restyling can change meaning

ISO 3758:2023 is the current published edition of the textile care-labeling standard, replacing the withdrawn 2012 edition. The system covers:

  • washing
  • bleaching
  • drying
  • ironing
  • professional care

GINETEX explains, for example, that:

  • numbers inside a wash tub indicate maximum washing temperatures
  • bars below the tub indicate milder processes
  • individual symbol variations have precise meanings

If you:

  • delete a bar because the mark feels crowded
  • change the vessel shape
  • add a decorative heart
  • recolor or stylize a protected mark outside its rules

you can alter meaning or violate the usage framework.

The brand should adapt around a standardized symbol; the standardized symbol should not be forced into the brand’s decorative style.

The U.S. market does not automatically equal the GINETEX system

The U.S. FTC Care Labeling Rule requires covered manufacturers and importers to provide regular care instructions and requires care information to be visible or easily found. If packaging or folding prevents consumers from seeing or finding the attached label, the care information may also need to appear outside the package or on a hang tag.

That does not mean every textile sold in the United States can simply use any version of GINETEX symbols found online.

For international projects, ask:

  • Which market?
  • Which care-labeling framework?
  • Is text required?
  • Are symbols permitted?
  • Who holds the license?
  • Which official artwork is current?

Do not build a “global care label” from Pinterest screenshots.

Start with an instruction table, not a sketchbook

Before drawing a custom icon family, create a table:

Code Instruction Mandatory? Standard symbol? Text needed? Market
C01 Wipe with soft dry cloth No No Yes Global
C02 Keep away from open flame Safety Check applicable system Yes Market-specific
C03 Machine wash 30°C Approved care instruction Textile system As required Target market

This forces the team to distinguish:

  • visual interpretation
  • standard status
  • regulatory requirement
  • optional guidance

It also makes review with legal, quality, and product teams much easier.

Build custom icons on one grid

Once you know an icon is genuinely custom, define the system:

  • fixed canvas such as 24×24 or 32×32 units
  • consistent stroke weight
  • corner-radius logic
  • line-cap style
  • optical weight
  • fill versus outline rules
  • diagonal-angle rule
  • circular-shape rule
  • internal padding

Do not draw a brush at 1 px and a bottle at 2.5 px.

Mathematical equality is not enough. A circle, diagonal line, and solid block can appear to have different visual weights even when the numeric stroke is identical, so apply optical correction.

Test icons at final production size

A 128 px icon can look beautifully detailed.

On a package it may be 6 mm wide.

Print it at:

  • 12 mm
  • 8 mm
  • 6 mm
  • actual required size

Check:

  • internal openings
  • line collisions
  • object recognition
  • differentiation between icons

If two icons cannot be distinguished at final size, simplify them.

Do not convert 6 mm into a universal recommended minimum. Printing method, substrate, ink spread, and stroke weight matter.

Add a short text label

For a wipe-clean symbol:
Wipe with a dry cloth

The icon makes scanning easier. The text removes ambiguity.

ISO 7001 itself recognizes that symbols can be used with text to improve comprehension. That principle is equally useful for custom care systems.

For bilingual packaging you can use:

  • icon
  • Arabic label
  • English label

or:

  • numbered icons
  • multilingual legend

Choose based on available space and reading flow.

The graphic must not contradict the text

If the text says: Hand wash only while the drawing visibly resembles a washing machine, many users will trust the picture first.

Review:

  • icon
  • label
  • color
  • title
  • surrounding examples

A decorative illustration should never contradict the action.

Example: synthetic-leather bag

Hypothetical approved care guidance:

  • wipe with a slightly damp soft cloth
  • do not use bleach
  • do not machine wash
  • keep away from direct heat

If the product is not a textile article using the applicable standardized care-symbol system, do not automatically borrow textile symbols simply because consumers recognize them.

A custom icon set might use:

  1. cloth icon — Wipe clean
  2. bleach bottle with slash — Do not use bleach
  3. washing machine with slash — Do not machine wash
  4. heat waves with distance — Keep away from direct heat

The underlying care instructions still need approval from the product manufacturer.

Example: a T-shirt

Here the situation is different.

If the brand uses ISO/GINETEX textile-care symbols:

  • do not redraw them
  • obtain official artwork through the authorized route
  • preserve their required form and order
  • add text where the market or product requires it

The brand can still create secondary explanatory icons on a hang tag, but those should not replace the care label required for the target market.

Do not use a slash or “X” for every idea

An X can mean:

  • prohibited
  • wrong
  • unavailable
  • do not do this

If every icon contains a giant X, recognition becomes harder.

Use prohibition marks when:

  • the action truly is prohibited
  • the base object remains recognizable
  • color is not the only signal

Avoid making the X so large that the underlying object disappears.

Safety is not a playground for brand-style icons

When care information involves:

  • electricity
  • heat
  • chemicals
  • fire
  • choking
  • sharp edges

do not create a new safety pictogram only to preserve brand style.

Check the applicable product and market safety system.

ISO 7001 specifically excludes safety signs from its scope, which is a useful reminder that not every pictogram belongs to the same standards family.

Contrast matters more than brand subtlety

Pale gray icons on beige can look elegant in a design presentation and disappear on the real package.

For print:

  • check contrast
  • print on final stock
  • test metallic finishes
  • avoid relying only on gloss differences

For digital interfaces:

  • accessibility requirements may also apply if the icon is interactive or carries essential information

The same icon asset may appear both on packaging and online, but the technical criteria can differ.

How to design “Store upright”

A simple bottle icon by itself may only mean: “This product is a bottle.”

Add:

  • a baseline
  • upward orientation cue
  • optional incorrect tilted state with prohibition mark
  • text: Store upright

Then test it.

Ask participants: “What do you think this means?”

Do not ask: “Does this mean store upright?”

The second question gives them the answer.

Run an unguided comprehension test

Show eight icons without the labels.

For each one ask:

  • What do you think it means?
  • How confident are you?
  • What would you do?

Then show the text.

If many participants consistently read an icon incorrectly, revise the icon. Do not blame the participants for “not understanding design.”

The purpose is communication, not a visual-intelligence test.

A small test does not prove universal comprehension

Testing with five people can reveal:

  • confusing symbols
  • duplicate meanings
  • size problems

It does not establish that an icon is “universally understood.”

High-risk or mass-market applications may require more rigorous research and applicable standard testing.

Do not write: 100% universally understood after an internal five-person test.

Maintain metadata for every icon

Store:

  • icon ID
  • official name
  • intended meaning
  • source
  • standard status
  • license status
  • version
  • languages
  • minimum tested size
  • stroke rules
  • modification restrictions

Example:

CARE-TXT-ISO-WASH-30
Source: licensed standardized symbol
Modify: No

versus:

CARE-CUSTOM-WIPE-DRY
Source: brand custom
Modify: according to design system

This prevents a future designer from editing a protected standardized symbol because its source was undocumented.

Usage rights belong in the asset library

GINETEX states that its five care symbols are protected trademarks in most countries and that unauthorized or incorrect use can lead to legal action.

Do not store those assets in: Free Icons

Store them in something like: Licensed / Care symbols / Do not modify

and include the relevant usage guidance.

The same discipline applies to certification marks and other proprietary symbol systems.

Not every instruction needs an icon

Consider: “After first use, retighten the screws after 24 hours.”

A clock + screw + arrow may become harder to interpret than the sentence.

Use text.

Icons save space when meaning remains obvious. They fail when they turn a simple instruction into a puzzle.

Order can imply sequence

If you show: Wash → Dry → Iron users can interpret a process.

If the icons are independent care rules, do not number them 1, 2, 3 unless order matters.

Use a heading such as: Care rules and place them in a non-sequential grid.

Standardized care systems may have prescribed order rules; follow the correct system.

Package version versus full guide

The package might carry:

  • three essential care icons

while the online or printed guide carries:

  • eight detailed instructions

Do not force every instruction into the front panel.

A QR code can connect to extended guidance, but it should not remove mandatory information or essential warnings from where the applicable system requires them.

Practical workflow

  1. Collect approved product-care instructions.
  2. Classify each item: Standard / Regulatory / Custom.
  3. Confirm target market.
  4. Obtain official symbols and licensing where required.
  5. Design custom icons only for genuinely custom instructions.
  6. Add supporting text.
  7. Test final physical size.
  8. Test in grayscale.
  9. Run a comprehension check.
  10. Review with product/regulatory owner.
  11. Record source and version.
  12. Export SVG/PDF/PNG variants as needed.

Final preprint checklist

  • Has any standardized symbol been restyled?
  • Is licensing documented?
  • Is the standard edition current?
  • Is the target market correct?
  • Is the meaning supported by text?
  • Is the icon legible at final size?
  • Is color only a secondary cue?
  • Are similar icons visually distinct?
  • Does any custom icon resemble a certification?
  • Are safety symbols approved?
  • Are the underlying instructions correct?
  • Do digital and print uses preserve the same meaning?
  • Does the source file identify the status of each symbol?

Final takeaway

Product care icon design begins by separating standardized symbols from custom visual guidance. Do not restyle textile care marks to fit the brand, and do not use a protected or regulated symbol without confirming market rules and licensing. When the icon is truly brand-owned, build it on a consistent grid, test it at final size, and use text to remove ambiguity. A good icon compresses information; a vague icon adds another layer of interpretation the customer did not need.
