  • Bleed

DO NOT PLACE CRITICAL ART HERE

Background.

  • Paper twist handles.
  • Flat paper handles.
  • Cotton rope.
  • Ribbon.
  • Die-cut handles.

Pattern.

  • Pattern.

Photoshop.

Artboard.

Flat paper handles.

Gusset.

  • 100% sustainable.
  • Eco friendly.
  • Zero impact.
  • Fully recyclable everywhere.

إذا كان لديك: Made with 80% recycled paper ويملك العميل إثباتًا مناسبًا، فهذا أكثر تحديدًا من “Eco Bag”.

Pattern.

مثال: Scan for care & warranty أفضل من: SCAN ME

Bleed.
Overprint.
Spot colors.
Join.
Proof.

A paper shopping bag is one of those objects that looks simple in a mockup and becomes complicated in production. On screen, you see a clean rectangle: logo in the center, pattern around it, perhaps a full-color background. In manufacturing, the missing realities appear: side gussets, a folded base, reinforced top edge, handle holes or attachments, glue areas, print joins, paper deformation under load, and small registration variation.

That is why good paper shopping bag graphics do not begin at the geometric center of the front panel. They begin with the converter’s actual dieline and a map of every area that will fold, disappear, bend, or be stressed during use.

Start with the final dieline, not dimensions typed in a message

A note such as: “Bag size: 30 × 40 × 12 cm” is not enough for production artwork.

You need:

  • front panel width
  • back panel width
  • side gusset width
  • folded base depth
  • top turnover or reinforcement depth
  • handle-hole or handle-attachment positions
  • glue area
  • required bleed
  • print orientation
  • registration tolerance or production notes from the converter

Two bags with the same outside dimensions can be constructed differently. If you begin with a simple 30 × 40 rectangle, part of the logo may end up inside a fold or behind the handle.

Draw a risk map over the dieline

Before placing brand assets, create a non-printing layer called something like:

DO NOT PLACE CRITICAL ART HERE

Mark:

  • fold paths
  • handle holes
  • reinforced top fold
  • base fold
  • glue flaps
  • print-join areas

These are not always areas where all ink is forbidden. The distinction is between:

  • artwork that may bend, such as a background or simple pattern
  • artwork that must remain intact, such as a logo, URL, QR code, or brand name

A background color can cross a fold. The brand name should not require the shopper to open a gusset to read its last letter.

Test logo position while the bag is being carried

A logo centered geometrically on the flat panel may not appear centered in the real viewing situation.

Why?

  • handles pull the top inward
  • the hand covers part of the upper region
  • contents change the bag’s shape
  • the bag tilts while moving
  • the bottom expands differently depending on the load

Build a full-size paper prototype, place a weight similar to the real products inside it, and photograph it:

  • front-on
  • at 45 degrees
  • in a person’s hand
  • standing on the floor
  • filled to a realistic maximum

You may discover that the logo should move visually downward or sideways. Do not turn that into a universal millimeter rule. The prototype decides.

Handles are part of the graphic system

Common handle formats include:

  • twisted paper handles
  • flat paper handles
  • cotton rope
  • ribbon
  • die-cut handles
  • internal or external attachments

Each creates a different safety area.

If a rope crosses the upper front, avoid placing a small tagline behind it. If the handle is die-cut into the paper, do not position a circle or fine line so close that it looks like an accidental part of the cut.

Handle color also affects the design, but select it from converter samples rather than trusting a monitor.

Do both sides need the same design?

No.

A useful system can be:

  • Side A: primary logo
  • Side B: short line or pattern
  • Gusset: website or color stripe
  • Base: no consumer message

Avoid putting information the customer must find on the bottom. The base experiences abrasion and is difficult to read.

For a luxury store, the two main faces can create two different moments. For a bag intended to act as a moving street identifier, repeating the brand on both major faces may be more useful.

Use the gusset deliberately

The side panel is not merely leftover space. It can carry:

  • pattern
  • a color stripe
  • website
  • collection name
  • very short message

But remember that the gusset folds inward when the bag is empty. A long sentence can become unreadable.

A simple test: photograph the bag empty and filled. Does the side content work in both conditions?

Printing on natural kraft is not the same as designing on a brown screen background

On natural kraft:

  • white only exists if the print process provides white ink or another white layer
  • transparent inks are influenced by the paper color
  • light images may lose contrast
  • pastel colors can become muted
  • fine black detail can behave differently depending on absorbency

Do not put a brown rectangle behind the artwork in Photoshop and assume that you have simulated kraft printing.

Request:

  • actual paper sample
  • printed proof or swatches
  • printing process
  • whether white ink is available
  • fine-detail guidance
  • any coating or finishing limitations

Paper is a physical substrate, not a digital filter.

When does full-color coverage make sense?

Full-color bag printing is possible with several production methods, but the choice should serve the brand, quantity, and budget.

Ask:

  • Is the paper color part of the identity?
  • Do you need full coverage or would a spot color be stronger?
  • Would a simple pattern tolerate registration variation better?
  • Can the ink scuff during transport?
  • Do coatings or finishes affect recovery or environmental claims? The supplier should verify that.

A white bag with one well-chosen ink and a confident logo can look more premium than a design that uses every available finishing option.

Example: a jewelry-store bag

Hypothetical bag: 250 × 320 × 100 mm with rope handles.

Possible system:

  • front: restrained logo placed below the handle interaction zone
  • back: low-density pattern
  • gussets: secondary color only
  • inside top fold: one short message

Before approval:

  1. build the prototype
  2. add a comparable rope
  3. place the product box inside
  4. carry the bag
  5. photograph from eye level

If the rope crosses the logo in half the photos, the artwork has failed regardless of how perfect the flat artboard looks.

Second example: a fashion store

A larger bag with flat paper handles can use:

  • an intentionally oversized logo crossing visual boundaries, provided critical letterforms do not disappear into folds
  • small URL on the lower back
  • pattern on the gusset
  • generous negative space

At this scale, think billboard, not brochure. The bag is often seen in motion and from a distance.

Sustainability claims: paper appearance is not evidence

A paper bag can visually appear “greener” than plastic, but the designer should not automatically print:

  • 100% sustainable
  • eco-friendly
  • zero impact
  • recyclable everywhere

The FTC Green Guides explain that broad, unqualified environmental benefit claims such as “green” or “eco-friendly” can be difficult to substantiate and potentially misleading. More specific, qualified claims are preferable when supported.

If the brand can substantiate: Made with 80% recycled paper that is more precise than: Eco Bag

A recyclability claim should consider the actual bag construction, including handles, coatings, adhesives, inks, and the recycling infrastructure relevant to the market.

FSC trademark use is not a free design choice

FSC maintains formal trademark rules. Its current official knowledge base lists FSC-STD-50-001 V3-0 as effective from 1 July 2026, with defined transition arrangements. FSC also explains that on-product label use involves certified organizations, certified materials, official graphics, and approval procedures.

Therefore, do not:

  • redraw the FSC mark
  • distort its proportions
  • edit its internal text because the space is tight
  • place it because a supplier casually said the paper is “probably FSC”

Obtain the correct label through the certified supplier or authorized route and follow the applicable approval process.

EU PPWR: do not move future labeling dates into 2026

Regulation (EU) 2025/40, the Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR), began applying broadly from 12 August 2026, but many labeling obligations have later application dates.

Article 12 provides that harmonized material-composition labeling begins from 12 August 2028 or 24 months after the relevant implementing acts enter into force, whichever is later. Reusable-packaging labeling also has later dates and conditions.

For a paper bag intended for the EU market, do not invent a “PPWR 2026 label” and present it as an immediate universal requirement. Verify the package type, market, implementation date, and specific legal provision.

Is a shopping bag automatically reusable packaging?

A strong bag that can physically be carried twice is not automatically “reusable packaging” under every regulatory definition.

The PPWR definition and requirements involve design for repeated reuse and other system characteristics. Do not label a bag “REUSABLE” as a regulatory conclusion simply because the paper is thick.

A softer message such as: Reuse this bag where appropriate is a behavioral suggestion, not the same thing as a formal claim that the packaging is part of a qualifying reuse system.

QR codes on a flexible bag need special testing

A bag moves and bends. A QR code placed on a gusset or fold can deform.

If you need one:

  • use a flat panel
  • preserve quiet space
  • maintain strong contrast
  • keep it away from pattern
  • test on the actual printed bag
  • scan when the bag is empty and full
  • explain the destination

For example: Scan for care & warranty is more useful than: SCAN ME

Do not move mandatory on-pack information behind a QR code unless the applicable system explicitly allows it.

Prepare production files for the converter, not just the presentation

Before handoff:

  • use the supplier’s dieline
  • keep cut/fold lines on the correct technical layer
  • add required bleed
  • review overprint
  • verify spot colors
  • package or outline fonts only as requested by the supplier
  • keep an editable source version
  • avoid low-resolution raster artwork on a large bag
  • inspect print joins
  • request a proof

Do not destroy editability early by outlining everything before the copy is final.

Run a visual drop test

This is not structural testing. It is a simple visual check.

Place the bag on the floor as a shopper might. Does the brand disappear? Is a critical element too close to the base where it can scuff?

Then carry it next to the body. Does a hand or coat cover the logo?

This reminds the design team that a bag is a moving object, not a static poster.

Final takeaway

Strong paper shopping bag graphics begin with construction: folds, handles, base, glue, and movement. Branding comes after that map exists. Keep critical elements away from deformation zones, test on the real paper, and treat gussets and handles as part of the design system. If you make environmental claims, use specific substantiated language and respect trademark systems such as FSC and regulatory timelines such as the EU PPWR. The successful bag does not only look good when flattened; it remains recognizable when carried, filled, folded, and handled.
