A designer supplies packaging artwork with a soft shadow over a spot-color panel. The printer requests “no transparency.” Converting the entire front panel into an image may conceal the issue rather than resolve it, while refusing all flattening ignores workflows that genuinely require it. Handling transparency in a packaging PDF is a delivery decision tied to the receiving production path. Clarify the request, retain the master, and examine the affected regions in a derivative before approving a change.
Separate the meanings of transparency
Illustrator’s Transparency panel controls opacity, blending modes, opacity masks, and knockout groups. These describe relationships between graphic objects, not automatically the transparency of the packaging material. An opaque carton can contain transparent artwork effects; a clear label can contain artwork with no blending at all. Name the property being discussed before asking someone to remove or alter it. [1]
Do not use overprint as another term for reduced opacity. In the proposed handoff record, keep transparency and overprint behavior as separate questions and identify the relevant location. Adobe documents Illustrator’s overprint attributes and preview controls independently. Using that separate inspection helps avoid trying to solve an overprint issue by arbitrarily changing opacity. The presence of a spot color is not a reason to apply one overprint setting to every object. [2]
Understand what flattening changes
Adobe explains that flattening divides artwork into vector and raster regions. Output formats that cannot support transparency require its treatment, whereas PDF 1.4 and later can retain live transparency. That capability does not mean every export setting preserves it or every supplier accepts it. Once a flattened result has been saved, do not rely on reconstructing the original object relationships from that result. Keep an editable master. [3]
Ask the printer for an operational answer: do they want live transparency in the PDF, a flattened derivative, or a file they will flatten themselves? Which export configuration is approved for this work, and who reviews the transformed result? Do not decide from the age of the designer’s computer or a vague claim that one method is safer. Safety here means explicit responsibility and a relevant test, not simply eliminating every complex object.
If the answer remains unclear, send a small region that represents the problem rather than modifying the whole project. Request feedback tied to the actual file or to an image identifying the element. Ask the supplier to record the path used for evaluation. The issue may be resolved by one agreed configuration or may need further examination. A successful test of one region does not establish that every other document in the project will behave identically.
Create a useful test scene
This hypothetical carton-front example is not a completed production proof. It contains a band in a spot color named SPOT_BRAND, a product photograph, a shadow at 20% opacity, and a small text line near the shadow. The opacity is an example input, not a recommended print setting. The aim is to retain the intended appearance, preserve the agreed spot separation, and protect the text without simultaneously changing color conversion and page size.
Save the master, then make a live-transparency derivative if the supplier’s workflow permits it and a flattened derivative using their approved settings if a comparison is requested. Record names and purposes, and hold page dimensions, trim position, and artwork scale constant. Do not label both files “final.” They are identifiable candidates that should lead to one documented approval. Use the color preview as part of the review, not as a replacement for examining the PDF’s construction.
| Element | Question | Proposed evidence |
|---|---|---|
| Spot-color band | Does the intended separation remain after processing? | Separation names and the same region in both derivatives |
| Shadow boundary | Has an edge or area changed from the approved appearance? | Visual comparison followed by output-path review |
| Small text line | Has its construction or clarity changed in the overlap? | Object inspection and reading at the intended size |
| Photograph | Has its placement or treatment changed unintentionally? | Review of placement and properties in the exported result |
Separate changes in visible appearance from changes in construction. A scene may look similar although an object’s type has changed; a quick preview may also miss an important problem. Similar screenshots do not prove preservation of a spot separation. Conversely, a structural change alone does not establish that the print will be defective. The relevant question is whether the result satisfies the agreed delivery requirements and appearance through an evaluated production path.
Give each preview tool a specific question
Acrobat’s Flattener Preview helps identify transparent areas and affected objects, but Adobe states limits for accurately previewing spot colors, overprints, and blending interactions. Do not force every judgment into that one window. Use it to understand the scope of processing, then use the appropriate separation and overprint checks and the supplier’s review. These are documented tool limitations, not a new defect discovered through the hypothetical example. [3]
Adobe documents Output Preview within Acrobat’s print-production tools, including separations, overprint simulation, and object information. Inspect the exported candidate, not just the source document. Record the simulation setup when sharing a finding: naming an open window without its settings does not provide a reproducible comparison. These are digital inspection tools with limits, not physical evidence of the eventual machine result. [4]
If a thin line appears where displayed regions meet, record its location and investigate it using appropriate viewing and output conditions before deciding that it will print. Do not conceal it with a rectangle unless its cause is understood. Equally, do not dismiss it simply because display behavior could be involved. Ask the supplier to interpret the result in their environment. No physical proof was produced for this article, so it cannot classify a particular seam as harmless or real.
Change one decision at a time
If transparency settings, color conversion, image resolution, and page dimensions change together, identifying the cause of a difference becomes difficult. Propose a first round that changes only transparency treatment while holding other variables stable as far as practical. Document any additional transformations imposed by the supplier’s configuration. If they cannot be isolated, say so in the test record rather than claiming that the outcome measures transparency alone.
The artwork itself may offer another option: move text away from an overlap, simplify a complex group, or remove an effect that contributes little. Present this as a design decision with a visual consequence, not an invisible cleanup. Obtain appropriate approval when the agreed appearance changes. Keeping the product name readable can matter more than preserving an effect that was attractive early in development but now adds review complexity without a clear purpose.
A useful review conversation also distinguishes requirements from preferences. Ask whether the supplier’s request is necessary for processing, a recommendation for this particular artwork, or simply the format they normally receive. Record the answer without challenging their production expertise. The distinction makes later changes easier to understand: a new printer may have a different requirement, while the original visual intention remains the same. Preserve that intention in the master and preserve the production decision in the handoff notes.
Deliver one approved production version
Put the approved derivative in the production folder and retain alternatives in a separate review folder. State whether transparency remains live or was flattened, who performed the processing, which configuration was used, and which areas require attention. Point to the editable master without silently replacing it. If the supplier requests a change after approval, create a new version and repeat the affected checks instead of modifying the file identified by the earlier approval.
The decision is neither “flatten everything to be safe” nor “never flatten.” Match delivery to the supplier’s workflow and inspect the scene that presents the actual risk. For FargPack packaging design services, this record can accompany the proposed production files. When discussing a handoff, send the printer’s specification and the affected region. Together, they provide a more useful starting point than an instruction to make the file generically print-safe.
