A carton sample arrives at the studio and appears close to the approved color reference. The client takes it to a shop, sends a photograph, and says the color has changed. Before adjusting ink values, ask what actually changed: the physical sample, the lighting, or the comparison method? A packaging metamerism test begins with identifiable physical samples viewed under recorded conditions, not a designer’s memory compared with a phone image. The purpose is a decision that can be explained and repeated, not a promise of identical appearance beneath every possible lamp.
Identify the comparison before naming the problem
The International Color Consortium explains color appearance through the illuminant, the sample’s spectral reflection, and the observer. Two spectrally different samples can match under one light yet cease to match under another. That is the kind of metameric mismatch this exercise investigates. A statement that one carton looks darker in the evening does not, by itself, demonstrate a failed metameric match: it identifies neither a reference sample nor a controlled comparison. [1]
This distinction changes the assignment. Checking a label against its carton examines the relationship between two materials. Checking whether the product name remains readable on a shelf examines communication in context. A project may need both checks, but neither result substitutes for the other. Give the worksheet separate fields for “agreement with reference” and “design readability.” That small separation discourages the team from treating every visual complaint as evidence of incorrect ink formulation.
Establish a reference that everybody can identify
Propose one approved physical reference with a unique identifier and date. Record its material, finish, and viewing face. Keep a protected reference apart from the sample handled during routine discussions, and establish how the working sample relates to it. This is not an attempt to create an entire laboratory system. It is a practical way to avoid comparing an old paper proof with a new finished package and attributing every difference to lighting. Also record whether the client’s swatch is an actual target or merely an approximate expression of preference.
Without an approved reference, call the meeting a comparison of alternatives rather than a conformity test. Ask the decision owner what must remain consistent: carton-to-label agreement, the general color direction, or the legibility of the product name. A color number alone does not specify those priorities. For example, introducing an intentional white separator between two colored materials may be a reasonable design choice. It changes their visual relationship; it does not demonstrate that their colors have become identical.
Adobe recommends coordinating color management with production partners and calibrating and profiling the display. These measures support digital file review, but they do not replace examining physical materials. Use the digital preview to identify the correct artwork version and the areas under discussion, then keep the screen judgment separate from the sample judgment. Avoid editing the file simply to make an uncharacterized screen resemble a color remembered from an earlier visit. [2]
A teaching exercise: one carton, one label, one reference
The following scenario is hypothetical, not a test performed by FargPack for a client. A carton and a label both contain large teal fields and will be displayed together. Identify the carton as A, the label as B, and the reference card as R. Assume that the supplier has specified a primary review environment and that the retailer permits a sample check at a particular display location. Do not attach a standards claim or certification label to this exercise unless its actual requirements have been established and met.
Prepare a simple comparison surface and position the samples at the same level and orientation as far as practical. Examine them in the primary environment and then at the intended display location. Keep their arrangement consistent. After recording an observation, exchange the positions of A and B to check whether one location is influencing the impression. This is a proposed editorial workflow for making a comparison more useful, not a substitute for the supplier’s formal industrial acceptance procedure.
| Situation | Record the observation | Next action |
|---|---|---|
| Agreement in the primary environment, disagreement in the shop | The A-to-B relationship changed when the lighting environment changed | Repeat the comparison and request the supplier’s assessment of spectra and materials |
| Disagreement in both environments | Agreement was not established initially | Check the target and production version before assigning a cause |
| A difference appears when one sample is tilted | Viewing position also affects this observation | Separate position and finish effects from the change-of-light check |
| Color agreement but poor name readability | Matching color does not resolve communication | Review contrast and composition through a separate readability exercise |
These rows are not predicted results for every paper or ink. They show how to avoid jumping from an observation to an unproven diagnosis. It is legitimate to report “a difference requiring investigation” without claiming to know its chemical cause. If the team uses “acceptable” or “unacceptable,” connect those terms to a requirement agreed before the session. Do not redefine acceptance after seeing the alternative you happen to prefer.
Make the lighting record usable next time
Record the location, available light-source identification, session date, sample identifiers, viewing orientation, and any mixed lighting. Write “not measured” where a property has not been measured. A description such as “white light” does not establish that two sessions share equivalent conditions. Because spectral distribution matters to the explanation of color, reducing a source description to a single number is not evidence that its conditions match those of another source. [1]
Give observations and interpretations separate fields. An observation might say, “B appears more yellow than A at this position.” A proposed interpretation might say, “A controlled comparison is needed before changing the ink.” Do not merge these into “the label ink is wrong.” Precise language gives the supplier a manageable question: reposition the samples, investigate a particular material, or request better evidence. It avoids an unproductive argument about which participant sees color correctly.
For remote communication, use photographs to identify samples, positions, and disputed regions. Label them as contextual records rather than final color judgments. Ask how the images were captured and whether they were edited. Do not derive an approval value from an image with an unknown handling history. Likewise, two photographs taken on different days are not a replacement for viewing the physical samples together. The aim is to reduce unknown variables without discarding photography’s useful documentary role.
Translate the difference into a production question
If the observation repeats, send the supplier the identified samples and the records for both environments. Ask which next step fits their process: reviewing the ink formulation, comparing materials, trying another finish, or obtaining spectral measurements. Do not prescribe a remedy before the cause has been investigated. When an alternative is proposed, request a newly identified sample and retain the earlier one. A comparison between two known options is more useful than a comparison between a new sample and an increasingly uncertain memory.
If measurements are supplied, request the reference identification, measurement conditions, difference calculation, and agreed acceptance threshold. This guide provides no universal pass value because the teaching example has no approved production specification. Passing a comparison under one defined condition also cannot logically establish agreement under every sales environment. State the limits of approval so that the record is not later used to support something the session never tested.
The artwork may warrant a separate discussion. Must the two colored fields touch directly? Could a deliberate separator clarify the components of the range? Is the variant identified by a name as well as a color? These are design options to discuss, not devices for concealing a known manufacturing defect. Present what an alternative changes visually and what still requires physical approval. Keep the client’s decision and the supplier’s assessment together in the project record.
Approve only what the session established
A proposed approval statement is: “Samples A, B, and R were reviewed under the conditions recorded for this session. Agreement was accepted for the specified display scope; a new material or lighting environment requires an appropriate further review.” Add the decision owner and unresolved observations, or state that approval is deferred. A useful record does not merely declare the color excellent. It identifies what was compared, under which conditions, and why a decision could be closed.
For a FargPack packaging or label project, this worksheet can form part of the proposed handoff requirements. When discussing a new brief, bring the physical reference and the intended display context rather than relying on one photograph. A useful lighting test starts by stabilizing the question, then collecting evidence suited to answering it. Changing the color is a possible later decision, not the automatic first response.
