Packaging artwork can look correct in a composite preview while containing an unnecessary spot color, small text on unintended separations, or a cutting reference that has entered the production version. A packaging color-separations review therefore asks more than whether the picture looks attractive. It asks what is assigned to each separation and whether that assignment matches the specification for this particular job.
The most useful starting point is a written list of expected separations. Without an expectation, switching channels on and off becomes an exercise without a decision criterion. This article develops an educational review for a hypothetical coffee carton and turns its findings into a repair record. It does not claim that screen inspection alone approves the printed result.
Define the expected result before hunting for errors
Color separation divides artwork among process-color channels and, where specified, additional spot-color channels. More channels are not inherently wrong. The issue is an unexplained separation or a missing required one. Adobe’s Illustrator documentation distinguishes process and custom spot separations. [1]
Assume the supplier agreement for our example specifies process printing plus one spot color for the logo. The cutting outline is an engineering reference delivered in the supplier’s requested manner, not a decorative color. Also assume that the supplier has requested the small text on black alone. These are conditions invented for this example, not rules imposed on every coffee carton or every printing plant.
At the top of the review sheet, record the version and number of pages or faces, then list the expected separations and each one’s purpose. Keep technical elements such as cutting and finishing references in a separate part of the specification. If the manufacturer’s requirements differ, change the checklist before judging the file. This prevents a legitimate channel being deleted simply because it falls outside a familiar recipe.
Use separation preview as an inspection tool
In Illustrator, open Window > Separations Preview and enable Overprint Preview. Adobe documents this preview for CMYK document mode and explains that hiding a separation changes its screen visibility, not whether it will output. Switching off an eye icon is therefore not a file repair. [1]
First compare the listed names with the expected ones. Do not casually change an original document’s color mode when its color history is unknown merely to access an inspection feature. Preserve a working copy and establish any required conversion within the color-management agreement. If a final delivery PDF already exists, inspect it too: the production question concerns what the next party receives, not only what the working artboard displays.
An educational audit: six coffee-carton findings
The following findings are fictional and are provided to demonstrate the review method. They were not extracted from client artwork or measured on a press. The table deliberately separates the observation, the question it raises, and the proposed response. Two designers can then discuss the same file without treating every difference as a matter of personal taste.
| Observation | Controlling question | Proposed action |
|---|---|---|
| Two similar logo-color names | Are these two intended inks or duplicate definitions? | Match the definitions to the supplier specification |
| Small text appears on several channels | Does it conflict with this example’s black-only requirement? | Correct the relevant objects and inspect again |
| The cutting outline appears among color separations | Is this the agreed delivery method? | Separate reference and production versions as specified |
| Part of the logo is absent from its spot channel | Was it unintentionally assigned a process color? | Inspect the color of the actual shape |
| Overlapping text looks different | Is the overlap deliberate and reviewed? | Check the attribute with prepress |
| An explanatory mark sits outside the design | Is it a delivery aid or a printing object? | Remove it from production when it is not requested |
Inspect black first, then the logo spot channel
For this specific example, isolate black and find the small text that the supplier requested on that channel alone. Then check the other channels for the same text. A dark object appearing on several channels is not automatically a mistake: it could be a large background or part of a photograph. We are checking a defined text group. Naming that group first prevents an inappropriate correction across the entire artwork.
Next isolate the logo’s spot color. The visible objects should match the expected logo map, rather than merely looking similar in a composite. If half the logo disappears, inspect the absent shapes’ color definitions. If two similar names are listed, establish why both exist before merging them. Sometimes the distinction is intentional; sometimes it arrived with an imported asset. Appearance alone does not resolve that question.
Record which objects changed, not just which command was used. “Colors unified” is insufficient when a colleague needs to verify that the background remained unchanged. A better entry is: “The lettering portion of the logo was reassigned to the approved spot swatch; the photograph remains process color.” This makes the next review a defined check instead of another unstructured inspection from the beginning.
Separate intentional overprint from a color mistake
Adobe explains that overprint retains underlying colors rather than knocking them out, and that preview can help inspect the interaction. Enabling it is not a universal remedy for all text or dark objects. The affected objects and intended result still need review within the printer’s workflow. [2]
In the hypothetical carton, place a review note around text sitting across a changing colored background. Ask what that text must do and how the supplier intends to reproduce it before changing the attribute. Do not force all objects into the same behavior through a broad command. Also keep this discussion distinct from compensation for color-to-color alignment. Related production decisions can share a meeting without becoming the same decision.
Repeat the relevant checks on the PDF you will send
Acrobat’s Output Preview provides tools for inspecting separations and color information in a PDF. Its value here is moving the review onto the actual delivery file. Source-document inspection does not replace export inspection, and opening a PDF in an ordinary viewer is not equivalent to checking it with an appropriate production tool. [3]
Compare the exported channel list with the original expectation. Revisit the logo and text groups that were changed, and confirm that the explanatory version is not the attachment selected for delivery. Put the actual exported filename in the review report. If an export setting changes afterward, do not silently treat the report as approval for the new file. Repeat the affected checks and record the correct version.
What counts as a finished review?
A finished review means the identified issues have been resolved or clearly assigned to the person who must answer them. It does not establish that the material has been approved, that a physical sample passed, or that operating conditions are guaranteed. Use three outcomes: consistent with the available specification, requires correction, and requires a supplier response. An explicit unknown is better than an approval unsupported by the necessary information.
Keep the final report practical: expected and actual separations, confirmed changes, and remaining questions. In this example, the cutting-reference delivery method might still require one answer. That question need not prevent the logo-color correction from being completed, but it does prevent treating the production version as final before the question is resolved.
A good separation review exposes the difference between an artwork that looks right and one built according to the production agreement. The FargPack service overview covers packaging design and print preparation. The contact page can be used to establish the supplier file and required separations before the review starts, rather than discovering delivery conditions in the final email.
