A front panel can look successful in the design file while losing an important message on the shelf. The product may be displayed from another side, a fold can interrupt the name, or the store photograph may make the intended front appear secondary. Start by identifying the physical face the shopper will encounter before choosing imagery or typography.
This exercise uses a fictional chocolate carton to connect the message with the package structure and display conditions. It moves from a paper template to an online-store preview. It is not artwork for a commercial product, and food information or claims require approval by the responsible product team.
Identify the front on an assembled package
Obtain a sample or model of the approved template. Establish the opening direction, base and face presented to the shopper. The largest rectangle in a dieline is not automatically the front. Some packages sit horizontally, others hang from a tab, and some are partly hidden by a display tray.
Print and assemble the unprinted template, then mark its front, back and top. Save a photograph of the agreed orientation with the brief. This prevents a vertical composition being built for horizontal display. For flexible bags, identify seals, folds and the area that remains relatively flat after filling.
Write the front panel’s message in one sentence
What should someone understand from looking at the face? In this example, the answer might be that this is dark chocolate and that this is a particular variant within the range. “Premium and different” describes an impression but does not identify the information needed to create it.
Collect proposed messages and distinguish recognition essentials, comparison information and details that may belong elsewhere where requirements permit. Do not add a claim simply to fill a gap. If the client wants an ingredient percentage or nutrition-related statement, obtain approved wording before designing around it. A later change can alter the composition substantially.
Choose the image’s role before sourcing it
An image can identify the product, establish a mood or explain its use. Decide which job is needed. A broken chocolate piece can reveal texture, whereas a cocoa-pod illustration refers to an ingredient without showing the finished product. Their connection to chocolate does not make them interchangeable.
Check rights, resolution and suitability for the actual product. Do not depict a filling, portion or ingredient that is absent merely because the picture is appealing. If an asset is provisional, make its status clear in review files. Approve the final asset before building delicate layout relationships around its exact shape.
Compose within the physical face
Mark the panel boundaries and supplier-confirmed safety areas before positioning content. Do not reuse a margin from another job without review. A name close to a fold can appear acceptable on screen yet become visually interrupted when assembled, especially if part of a letter crosses onto the side.
Compare two meaningfully different compositions: a prominent product image with a clear name in a quiet area, and a typography-led face with a smaller illustration. Three background colours do not necessarily represent three design directions. Explain the problem each option addresses, such as product recognition, reduced clutter or extension across variants.
Review transitions onto adjacent faces
The front is part of a three-dimensional object. If an image or colour field extends onto a side, inspect its relationship to the fold. Does it depend on precise alignment that production tolerances may affect? Does the fold cut an important detail? A broad colour transition can be more forgiving than a fine line requiring exact registration.
Assemble a colour mockup and compare it with the flat artwork. Review the relationship between top and front and the orientation of text after opening. Do not make hidden production areas essential to the visible message. Include any outer sleeve or security label in the model to see what remains exposed.
Test the face in a store photograph
Create a preview reflecting the likely camera angle and the package’s size within the product listing. Avoid an unusually tight crop that makes the artwork appear more effective than it will be in use. Compare recognition of the name and category rather than fine details people can inspect after opening the product page.
If the name disappears, review its placement, contrast or block size. Adding text outside the package may help a particular promotional image, but it does not demonstrate that the physical face works. Keep separate images for separate tests so the team can evaluate the intended decision.
Test the range before approving the first package
Try the longest and shortest names, lighter and darker images, and a variant needing an additional descriptor. Do not wait for the first production file to discover that the system cannot handle another product. For the chocolate exercise, compare a simple version with a longer name, using approved client information in a real project.
Specify what remains fixed and what may adapt: brand position, name-block width, image area and quantity location. A flexible line-break rule may be needed, but moving every element for every variant weakens the system. Useful flexibility accommodates content differences while preserving recognition across the range.
Separate direction selection from production approval
When presenting alternatives, identify whether the decision concerns composition and message or final copy, materials and printing. Known constraints should still inform early work. The distinction prevents an attractive mockup from being mistaken for approval of every technical detail. Record the selected version and outstanding comments.
Before delivery, review actual size, image resolution at placed dimensions and the agreed font-handling workflow. Confirm trim, folds and any special colours with the supplier. Use the print-preparation guide for technical checks and the packaging mockup guide for presenting the direction clearly.
Front-panel review sheet
- Display and opening orientation are confirmed on an assembled model.
- The product category and variant are understandable without spoken explanation.
- The image has a defined role and matches approved product content.
- Important elements avoid areas obscured by folds or display conditions.
- The panel works at actual size and in a representative store image.
- The system accommodates long names and range variations.
- The approved version is clearly distinguished from drafts.
A useful front panel is more than an attractive flat composition. It works on a particular structure in a particular viewing situation. Testing those conditions early makes feedback more precise and reduces surprises after the visual design is complete.
