Unboxing.
  • QR.

THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU

Scan for support

  • Recycled paper
  • FSC-certified
  • Recyclable

[Brand].

An order thank-you card looks simple: a logo, a “thanks for your order” line, a social handle, and maybe a discount code. But when nearly every ecommerce insert follows the same formula, the card becomes a piece of paper the customer glances at for a second and throws away. A stronger design starts with a more useful question: What does the customer need immediately after opening the order?

The answer might be product-care guidance, assembly instructions, storage information, a clear support route, a link to a detailed guide, or an invitation to leave an honest review. When the card performs one of those jobs, it becomes part of the product experience rather than a small politeness poster.

Start with the use moment, not the words “Thank You”

Imagine three different orders:

  • A garment that needs specific washing instructions.
  • A candle that needs wick-care and safety guidance.
  • A technical product that needs assembly or setup information.

In each case, the customer has a practical question after opening the box. If the entire front is consumed by “Thank you for being part of our family” while the essential information sits in tiny copy on the back, the hierarchy serves the brand before it serves the user.

A useful rule is: Let the first half of the card serve the customer; let the second half build the brand relationship.

That does not remove warmth. One honest sentence is enough. Then give the customer something useful.

Give the card one primary job

Many insert cards fail because the team wants them to do everything:

  • thank the customer
  • offer a discount
  • request a review
  • ask for an Instagram follow
  • request an unboxing post
  • explain care
  • explain returns
  • show a QR code
  • list email
  • list WhatsApp
  • display five icons

A small card cannot support ten equally important calls to action. Choose one primary function and, at most, two secondary ones.

For example:

Primary: product care.
Secondary 1: support contact.
Secondary 2: honest review request.

Or:

Primary: assembly.
Secondary 1: QR to an instructional video.
Secondary 2: keep the card as a reference.

As calls to action increase, the likelihood of any one action being noticed decreases.

A thank-you card is a poor place to ask for “five stars”

This matters in 2026. The U.S. Federal Trade Commission’s Consumer Reviews and Testimonials Rule prohibits businesses from offering compensation or incentives that are conditioned on a review expressing a particular positive or negative sentiment. FTC guidance also makes clear that businesses can ask real customers for honest reviews and, in some situations, can provide incentives that are not conditioned on sentiment — but disclosure requirements and the review platform’s own policies may still apply.

So this line: “Leave us a 5-star review and get 20% off.” is not merely awkward copy. In some contexts it can create a compliance problem.

A better request is: “Share your honest experience — your feedback helps us improve.”

If the business offers something of value for submitting a review regardless of sentiment, the business should review applicable law, disclosure obligations, and platform policies. The designer should not invent the promotion mechanics.

Do not ask for a product review before the product has been used

A card arrives before the customer has necessarily experienced the product. Asking for an immediate product review may encourage feedback about delivery speed or packaging appearance rather than the product itself.

A better line can be: “Once you’ve had time to use it, we’d love to hear your honest feedback.”

If a QR code goes to a review page, check:

  • Does the page work well on mobile?
  • Does it require an unexpected account?
  • Is it clear that the customer is leaving your site?
  • Is the destination stable?
  • If a dynamic QR is used, who controls the redirect account?

Do not rely on the QR code alone. Where practical, include a short destination name or URL as a fallback.

Useful information can outperform a generic coupon

A discount can be commercially valuable, but it is not automatically the best use of an insert. If a product can be damaged by incorrect care, a short care guide may create more customer value than a 10% code.

For a hypothetical leather product: To keep the item in good condition:

  1. Keep it away from direct water exposure.
  2. If it becomes wet, follow the maker’s approved drying method.
  3. Store it according to the approved care instructions.

Then: Need help? Scan the support QR or use the approved contact channel.

The instructions themselves must come from the product maker. A designer should never invent care advice that could damage the material.

Front side: one message readable in a second

A useful front can include:

  • moderate logo
  • one short thank-you line
  • a headline for the practical value

For example: Thanks for choosing us.
Three things to know before first use.

That performs better than filling the card with large THANK YOU typography and multiple hashtags when important guidance exists.

If the order may be a gift, avoid printing sensitive purchasing information. A gift recipient should not accidentally receive price, buyer details, or private order notes through the thank-you insert.

Back side: information grid, not a logo collection

A clean back can be structured as:

  • clear heading
  • three to five points
  • one primary call to action
  • concise support details
  • QR code with a label

Under the QR code, say what happens: Opens the care and support guide instead of: SCAN ME!

“Scan me” tells the user what action to take, but not why. The promised outcome is more important than the scanning instruction.

Card size should follow use, not fashion

Business-card and A6-like sizes are common, but they are not universal rules. Choose dimensions based on:

  • box size
  • text length
  • whether the customer should keep the card
  • whether illustrations are required
  • whether it fits a holder or product pouch
  • printing and finishing cost

A large card in a small box can bend. A tiny card can make care instructions unreadable.

Print at 100% scale before approval. Large design monitors make type and margins look more generous than they are in the hand.

Paper should support the function

If the customer is expected to keep the card as a reference, choose a stock that tolerates repeated handling. If it is a short-lived seasonal message, a very heavy premium stock may add cost without useful value.

Be careful with environmental claims printed on the card:

  • recycled paper
  • FSC-certified
  • recyclable

Do not add them automatically. FSC explains that on-product FSC labeling is tied to certified materials, authorized organizations, and approval rules for trademark use. A designer should not create a tree icon that resembles FSC branding or place an FSC label without the approved supply-chain process.

If there is no supported environmental claim, kraft-colored paper does not need an environmental story added to it.

Practical example: reusable travel mug

Imagine an insert for a reusable insulated mug.

Front: Thanks for choosing [Brand].
Three things before first use

Back:

  1. Clean the product using the manufacturer’s approved method.
  2. Assemble the lid according to the product guide.
  3. Use the mug only within the product’s approved temperature limits.

Then: Full guide + replacement parts + support
QR

At the bottom: After you’ve used it, share your honest feedback.

Notice what is missing:

  • no request for five stars
  • no invented temperature numbers
  • no “eco-friendly” claim simply because the item is reusable

The card stays inside the evidence the business actually has.

A second example: a product that needs no instructions

Suppose the product is a notebook.

The card can instead be useful by carrying:

  • collection name
  • product code for reordering
  • a real refill or accessory route
  • customer support
  • an honest review invitation

For example: When you finish this notebook, keep code FP-NB-04 to reorder the same size.

That gives the card a practical reason to remain useful.

Do not make the card depend on one social platform

Social handles can change, accounts can be restricted, and platforms can disappear. For long print runs, use a stable first-party destination such as:

  • the company domain
  • a stable support page
  • a managed QR destination controlled by the business

Social channels can remain secondary.

If the QR uses a free third-party shortener that the company does not control, thousands of printed cards can become useless when the service or account changes. Confirm ownership of the redirect path before printing.

Privacy: ask only for data you need

If the QR code opens a feedback survey, do not automatically ask for:

  • birth date
  • phone number
  • postal address
  • ten profile questions

If the goal is packaging feedback, three questions may be enough:

  • Did the product arrive in good condition?
  • Were the instructions clear?
  • What would you improve?

Lower friction can make feedback easier and reduces unnecessary personal-data collection. Any personal-data processing still belongs under the company’s privacy obligations and applicable law.

Write warmly without becoming generic

Avoid copy such as: “You are the best customer in the world and your order means everything to us.”

A playful brand can certainly sound warm, but specificity is stronger: “Thanks for choosing our product. We put the three most important first-use notes on this card so you don’t have to search for them.”

Warmth is useful. Replaceable emotional filler is not.

Test the card with five questions

Give a prototype to someone unfamiliar with the project and ask:

  1. What is the most important thing this card wants you to do?
  2. Where would you go for help?
  3. What happens if you scan the QR code?
  4. Is any claim or promise unclear?
  5. Would you keep the card? Why?

If the person says “it’s just a thank-you and discount card” while the card actually contains critical instructions, the hierarchy has failed.

Test production, not only layout

Print a proof and:

  • place it inside the real box
  • open the package as a customer would
  • see whether the card is visible or buried
  • confirm that ink does not transfer onto the product
  • check whether the card bends
  • scan the printed QR under normal light
  • read the smallest copy
  • check whether stock color has reduced contrast

Never approve a QR code only from the screen. Scan the printed version with an average smartphone, not only a flagship device.

What the card usually does not need

Avoid filling it with:

  • long legal policies
  • every social account
  • ten hashtags
  • internal barcodes irrelevant to the customer
  • unsupported certification marks
  • unlabeled QR codes
  • requests for positive-only reviews
  • discounts with hidden terms
  • care instructions copied from a similar product

Every element should earn its space.

A practical content framework

  2. [approved instruction]
  3. [approved instruction]

After using the product

Share your honest feedback. We read it because it helps us improve.

The wording changes by product. The principle is to place usefulness before politeness.

Final takeaway

Good order thank-you card design gives the customer a reason to keep the card for more than a second. Use it for care, setup, support, or a useful reference, then add the thank-you and relationship-building message. If you ask for reviews, ask real customers for honest feedback and never make a reward depend on positive sentiment. A small card can improve a large experience — but only when it stops trying to become a miniature advertisement for everything.
