A customer may recognise the green powder as matcha and still hesitate over a more basic question: what should I do with it? Does it need water only? Is the mixture sweetened? Does the latte photograph mean milk is already included? Matcha packaging design for beginners should resolve these uncertainties before adding an impressive Japanese word or a gold badge that requires explanation.
The pack needs to answer three questions in sequence: what is inside, how do I make my first drink, and how do I close it afterwards? That does not mean turning the front into a recipe book. It means selecting one clear starting route and placing supporting information where it remains useful. The educational example below uses a hypothetical 30 g pack and distinguishes original design proposals from a tea producer’s published instructions.
Identify the contents before suggesting a drink
Place the product description near the brand name. When the approved formulation is pure matcha powder, do not name it a latte mix. When it contains sugar, milk powder or other ingredients, do not make it look indistinguishable from the pure powder. Begin with the formulation supplied by the product owner, not the particular shade of green chosen for the design.
Separate three different messages: a description identifying the powder, a statement explaining an approved use, and a serving-suggestion caption for a prepared drink containing additions not supplied in the pack. A small caption is not a universal remedy for a misleading photograph. The picture should already make sense alongside the name and formulation.
For this example, the front carries the name, product description, weight and one usage statement. Farm, cultivar, harvest and origin details appear only when documented. A mountain landscape or Japanese lettering does not establish where the contents were produced. Decoration cannot double as a passport.
Do not substitute a grade badge for useful information
A team may suggest making “Ceremonial Grade” the visual centrepiece. Before enlarging it, ask the supplier what the expression means within its range and whether a defined system or supporting document exists. Ippodo states that it does not use the term and considers it a vague marketing description. That is an identified producer’s position, not a comprehensive legal conclusion covering every market. [1]
The design implication is to avoid presenting the wording alone as an independent certification. An approved usage description or sensory profile may be more informative than an invented quality ladder. Where a brand uses its own categories, explain their practical purpose rather than making the labels look like official inspection seals.
“Beginner-friendly” should describe the accessibility of the instructions, not suggest inferior contents. A refined pack can explain measured water and grams without becoming clinical. Clarity is not the budget version of premium design.
Choose one starting recipe and identify its source
A genuinely published recipe provides a useful model for organising instructions. Ippodo’s Usucha method specifies 2 g of sifted matcha, 60 mL of water at 80°C, and 15 seconds of whisking. These are that producer’s published instructions, not a compulsory recipe for every matcha product. [2]
Do not transfer the figures to commercial artwork until the product owner approves them for the actual blend and intended experience. Here, they demonstrate the structure of a preparation panel: powder quantity, water quantity, temperature and action. Those four variables are more useful to a newcomer than “add hot water and enjoy.”
The proposed panel uses three numbered scenes: measure and sift, add measured water, then whisk. Each scene pairs a short verb with its relevant value. Keep the bowl at a consistent viewing angle. When adapting the panel between languages, do not reverse an action arrow simply to mirror the page. In Arabic, give numerals and units a coherent visual grouping.
When including a spoon measure, specify the spoon and filling method using approved instructions, while retaining a clear gram reference. “One spoon” alone leaves considerable room for domestic interpretation. The illustration should also reflect the modest water quantity in the selected recipe rather than showing a full mug that implies something else.
The purpose is not to make every customer weigh ingredients. It is to make the stated method internally consistent, so that another measure, when provided, can be checked against a defined reference.
Give the latte route its own identity
A customer attracted by a milk-based drink needs to know when to add the milk. Ippodo publishes a separate latte method using 3 g of matcha, 100 mL of water at 80°C, 15 seconds of whisking, and then 100 mL of milk. The differences concern powder and water quantities, not just the final photograph. [3]
That makes a separate “For a latte” strip more useful than mixing alternative values into one instruction panel. When space is tight, the second route can occupy another side. Do not place 60 and 100 beneath the same water icon without identifying their respective recipes. Nor should the colour of the illustrated drink be the only clue that milk must be added.
In the hypothetical pack, the water-only method receives the main panel and the latte receives a smaller, separate card. This priority suits a first-preparation learning goal; it is not nutritional advice or evidence that an untested blend suits every use. A brand focused on lattes can reverse the emphasis while preserving the separation.
An original calculation: how many preparations in 30 g?
A large “15 cups” claim hides an important condition. The educational arithmetic is straightforward: 30 divided by 2 gives 15 preparations, while 30 divided by 3 gives 10. Both calculations are correct, but they do not describe the same recipe.
| Calculation in this example | Powder per preparation | Theoretical preparations |
|---|---|---|
| A 30 g pack using the 2 g recipe | 2 g | 15 |
| The same pack using the 3 g recipe | 3 g | 10 |
These figures assume that all contents are used without loss. They explain quantity; they are not health dosages or approved nutritional serving counts. A pack that needs the information could state approximately 15 preparations when using 2 g each, subject to the product owner’s review of the wording and quantity. The condition belongs with the number, not in an unrelated corner.
The same dependency matters when adapting a pack size. Changing 30 g to 40 g requires more than editing one weight field. Check preparation counts on the front, sides and marketing images. A visually minor number can carry a surprisingly large inconsistency.
Avoid adding a separate count for every possible recipe merely because the arithmetic is available. One well-qualified example may be easier to understand than a crowded menu of theoretical yields. Where the range needs several counts, use the same calculation method and state each basis consistently.
Design the closing moment as well as the opening
Ippodo’s storage guide recommends an opaque, tightly closed container away from sunlight, heat and strong smells, and discusses resealing an inner bag where one is supplied. These are instructions for its products. Obtain storage conditions and any after-opening period from the responsible product owner before applying them to another brand. [4]
The visual task is to explain the actual package. With a bag inside a tin, an illustration showing only the outer lid may omit a relevant action. With a resealable pouch, the closure drawing must match the real zipper and how it is handled. An attractive diagram of a different container is not an instruction.
Place storage guidance where it survives opening rather than printing it entirely on a strip that is torn away. Keep date and batch information separate from decorative texture. The designer should not invent shelf life or refrigeration advice from a general article, and should not confuse preserving flavour with assessing product safety.
This is also a reason to review the pack after a physical opening simulation. Information can be perfectly legible on a flat layout and disappear beneath a folded edge in use. The prototype needs to show what remains available after the customer has removed the lid or opening strip.
Test comprehension before approving the artwork
Print a full-size prototype and give it to someone uninvolved in the project. Ask them to identify the contents, explain the main preparation method and point out how they would close the pack. Avoid asking only whether the instructions are clear; someone may answer yes while confusing water and milk quantities.
Record the point of difficulty rather than judging the reader. Did they treat the smaller water quantity as the latte’s complete liquid volume? Did they assume sugar was included? Did they interpret a range badge as a certification? First revise the relevant heading or placement, then test again. This is a proposed exploratory exercise, not a completed study with an announced success rate.
Finally, compare the Arabic and English quantities, units, steps and preparation-count conditions. The wording can differ naturally, but one language must not silently prescribe 2 g while the other prescribes 3 g. Successful matcha packaging lets a newcomer identify the purchase and take the next step without learning an entire vocabulary before the first drink.
