A delicate botanical drawing looks elegant against white, then loses some of its open spaces on a brown kraft bag. The first suggestion is often more ink; the second is to enlarge everything. Neither identifies the problem. Is the issue weak contrast, merging lines, an uneven surface or the production setup? Kraft print fine detail design is better approached through matched artwork and ink samples than through a blanket judgement that kraft is poor quality or that every element must become bold.
The method below is a proposed educational experiment, not the result of a test performed on a particular product. Its purpose is to give designer and supplier a shared vocabulary, then support a limited adjustment that preserves the drawing’s character rather than replacing it.
Kraft describes a family, not one printing surface
Ask for the actual paper grade, print side, colour, surface treatment and proposed printing method. Mondi’s portfolio includes white and brown grades and options with different surface properties and functions. Brown appearance alone is therefore not a printing specification. [1]
PouchDirect’s 2026 artwork guide explains that substrate colour affects ink appearance and that some detailed designs may not suit direct kraft printing through the supplier’s available processes. It also notes that ink absorption can depend on the printing method. These are observations about a supplier’s system, not a universal ban on fine artwork. [2]
Distinguish printing directly onto exposed kraft from a package that looks like kraft but carries its print on another outer layer. Similar mockups can conceal very different ink-receiving surfaces. Establish the actual construction before proposing a remedy for paper absorption when the paper may not be the printed surface at all.
Identify what disappeared: the line, the gap or the contrast
Inspect three separate properties. First, is the printed line continuous? Second, are the spaces between lines and inside characters still open? Third, can the element be recognised at actual size? A line may remain intact under magnification while being difficult to distinguish from the background during ordinary reading.
Each finding suggests a different response. For a broken line, discuss the material and production setup before increasing the weight of the entire design. For closed gaps, test more internal space or fewer intersections. For weak contrast, a different ink, surface or distribution of clear areas may be more useful than doubling every stroke.
Avoid using “dull,” “unclear” and “rough” as though they describe one defect. Initial impressions are useful, but a production decision needs a location and observable behaviour: an intersection has closed, a character counter has filled, or a product-name dot is difficult to distinguish at the finished size.
Compare two prototypes using the same ink
With the printer, select sample A on the proposed kraft and sample B on a compatible white reference paper. Print identical artwork at identical size using the same ink batch and, where practical, matched settings. Record any necessary production adjustment. If adjustments differ, the exercise compares two practical printing systems rather than isolating paper as the only variable.
The comparison concerns the substrate as a whole. Where colour, texture and treatment all change, do not attribute every difference to brown colour alone. Nor should an office print on white be compared with a commercially printed kraft bag as though paper were the only difference. Two pictures placed side by side are not automatically a controlled test.
A proposed test strip might contain the fictional description “Roasted Coffee,” its Arabic equivalent “بن محمص,” a leaf drawing, straight and curved rules, positive text and reversed text. Include the Arabic characters, dots and internal spaces from the actual chosen typeface. Testing only Latin characters does not establish that the intended bilingual identity will survive.
Create a test ladder, not an invented production minimum
For an educational trial, propose stroke and gap widths of 0.20, 0.30, 0.40 and 0.60 mm, subject to the supplier confirming that these are meaningful samples for its process. They are not approved production limits or a promise that the finest version will print. Their value is providing distinct, identifiable steps for discussion.
Vary spacing as well as weight. Include one version with a finer stroke and more open space, and another with a heavier stroke and a narrower gap. The physical trial may show that opening the gap protects the image without sacrificing its delicacy. Test reversed text independently rather than treating a successful positive-text sample as proof that both will work.
| Test area | Observation to make | Possible design response after inspection |
|---|---|---|
| Character dots | Do they remain separate and recognisable? | Adjust their placement or choose a more balanced weight |
| Small botanical drawing | Are the veins distinguishable or merged? | Remove secondary veins and open the gaps |
| Reversed text in a solid panel | Do the counters remain readable? | Open internal spaces or consider positive text |
| Fine border | Is it continuous across the sample? | Test another weight or remove the border |
This table is a decision framework, not a set of findings. Complete the judgements only after physical samples exist. A small visual trial does not justify claiming that a substrate preserves a particular percentage of detail. Such a percentage would require a defined measurement method and actual data.
Inspect the size that people will read
Start at actual size under a defined viewing condition, then magnify to diagnose defects. Compare both samples under the same illumination and against the same background. Avoid phone photographs that make one sample brighter than the other. Ask the supplier for samples from relevant positions rather than selecting only the best-looking fragment.
Request appropriate production checks for ink adhesion and abrasion resistance. Pakka’s guidance distinguishes ink anchorage, registration and substrate preparation; a sharp photograph alone therefore does not establish how a print will behave during handling. This does not make the designer a testing laboratory or authorise a food-contact safety conclusion. [3]
Separate readability from aesthetic preference. A quieter brown ground may be preferred even when white reveals more detail. That can be a reasonable design choice if necessary information remains clear. A difference becomes troublesome when nobody established it in advance and it is only described as a defect after production.
Preserve the identity, not every individual stroke
Prioritise details by function. Product names, character distinctions and necessary information take precedence over ornament. Keep the structural features that make the drawing recognisable, then reduce secondary marks that contribute little to recognition. Removing a few veins from a leaf may preserve its character more effectively than thickening every vein until the drawing becomes a solid patch.
A single-ink trial helps examine shape without adding multi-colour registration as another variable. It is not a requirement for all kraft designs and does not imply that multi-colour printing is impossible. Similarly, adding a white underbase or another printable layer changes the system. Request a new sample rather than treating approval of the earlier comparison as approval of the new construction.
Where the identity contains details that cannot reasonably be simplified, discuss another paper grade, a different print location or a separate label. Do not present an option as cheaper or environmentally superior without relevant evidence. The immediate task is protecting communication, not asking one brown bag to solve every commercial objective simultaneously.
Make the final decision traceable
Approve the specified grade, artwork revision, ink, printing method and reference sample together with the supplier. Identify what protected the detail: more open spacing, a different weight, selective simplification or another surface. When a relevant element changes later, repeat the necessary check rather than assuming the old approval is permanent.
A white screen background is not a promise of the result on kraft, but kraft should not be treated as guilty before testing either. Compare, describe and then adjust. The useful outcome is a recognisable identity and readable information within a known production system—not an artificial contest in which one material must be declared the winner.
