The ingredients copy arrives late and is longer than the placeholder used in the layout. You reduce the type until it fits the remaining rectangle. Everything looks orderly on a zoomed-in screen, yet the list is difficult to read on the actual package. The problem began before the font-size decision: the information was never given space based on its real content.
An ingredients panel needs a different approach from a promotional front panel. Readers should be able to find and follow the information, and the product team should be able to review it without decoration obscuring a word or punctuation mark. This workflow moves from approved copy to a printed test, using a wraparound label on a cylindrical container as a layout exercise. The dimensions illustrate the method; they are not production specifications for another product.
Start with approved copy, not a competitor’s package
Ask the person responsible for the product for editable copy, its revision number, approval date and intended market. Separate ingredients, instructions, warnings and company details, even if they will eventually share the back panel. Identify any words that require special treatment and name the reviewer for each language. The designer organises approved information rather than rearranging ingredients for a neater paragraph or shortening technical names independently.
Keep a simple record connecting each text block to its source. For example: “Arabic ingredients — content file, revision 03 — approved” and “English translation — awaiting review”. If design begins before the content is complete, mark provisional copy in the working file and task record. Do not allow it to resemble final text and rely on memory at export. A clear note on a review layer can help prevent a temporary version from being delivered accidentally.
Separate the article’s languages from the package’s requirements
This article is available in Arabic and English, but that does not mean those are the only languages needed on every package. Canadian Food Inspection Agency guidance generally requires mandatory food information in English and French, subject to specified exemptions. Adding Arabic does not replace either required language. Confirm the market and language requirements before allocating columns, particularly when designing remotely for a product sold abroad.
Likewise, do not transfer allergen emphasis or type-size conventions from an overseas sample into a project for another market without checking the applicable requirements. Ask the responsible product team for an approved requirements list, then turn it into a design checklist. This article explains layout and readability; it is not an approved food label template.
Calculate usable space after allowing for the seam and curvature
Suppose the supplier provides a 180 × 65 mm template with an 8 mm overlap. If this exercise uses 4 mm internal margins on both sides, the preliminary available width is 164 mm: 180 − 8 − 4 − 4. That is an allocation area, not a guarantee that the entire width is readable from one viewing angle. Part of the label will curve away from the reader.
Print a paper strip at the same size and wrap it around the container. Mark the front, back and seam, then choose the information-panel position. Avoid placing the beginning of the list directly on a sharply turning edge or across the overlap. If the container tapers or changes circumference with height, a rectangular label may not sit as expected. Obtain the approved template instead of compressing the artwork to disguise a structural mismatch.
Allocate text blocks before refining typography
Place temporary boxes for ingredients, warnings, usage instructions and company details. Insert real copy before adding decorative elements. Within a hypothetical 78 mm back panel, one option is two 36 mm columns separated by 6 mm. Treat this as a comparison layout: if one language is much longer, two successive blocks may work better than narrow parallel columns.
Do not force the blocks to have equal height by shrinking one language until it looks secondary. Compare readability, line count and available room. Heading alignment and spacing can be consistent without making every block geometrically identical. Where market-specific requirements prescribe a format, start from that format rather than developing a layout that must be rebuilt later.
Test the typeface with the ingredient copy
A typeface that succeeds in a short product name may struggle with a dense list of brackets, punctuation and long ingredient names. Build a sample containing the complete copy and any numbers. In Arabic, inspect dots, counters and connections; compare the available weights. Avoid stretching or compressing text to force a preferred line ending.
Select an initial size according to the approved requirements and test it on paper. There is no universal value that suits every typeface, material and printing method. If the copy does not fit, review column width, decoration and information allocation before reducing the size. Save clearly named alternatives, such as “two columns” and “successive blocks”, so the comparison isolates a meaningful decision.
Check contrast and required emphasis
Text placed over photography or a textured pattern can be clear in one part of a line and disappear in another. Give the list a calm, consistent background and assess it on the intended substrate, especially if the material is transparent or metallic. If white ink is required, coordinate it with the printer as part of production preparation rather than treating a white rectangle on screen as sufficient.
When the approved copy identifies words requiring emphasis, apply the specified treatment and review every occurrence. Do not assume colour alone is appropriate without checking the requirements. Bold treatment can also change when fonts or versions are replaced, so include it in the post-export check. Examine the actual words rather than judging only the paragraph’s overall appearance.
Separate copy verification from the reading test
Copy verification compares the artwork against the approved source: names, order, commas, brackets and words crossing line breaks. The reading test asks whether the list has a clear starting point, whether the eye jumps into the neighbouring column, and whether important text sits too close to the seam. Passing one check does not prove that the other has passed.
Print at actual size with fit-to-page disabled, then measure the sample to confirm its dimensions. Wrap it around the intended package and ask a fluent reader to locate a specific ingredient and follow the list. Record where they hesitate rather than asking only whether the design looks good. This preliminary test can reveal spatial problems before production, but it does not replace specialist approval or the printer’s proof.
A compact handover checklist
- The artwork matches the approved copy and revision.
- The responsible product team has confirmed languages and emphasis requirements.
- The supplier’s template, seam and excluded areas are documented.
- The list has been tested at actual size on the intended shape.
- Punctuation and specially treated words have been checked after PDF export.
- Late changes are recorded and revised content is approved again where needed.
If ingredients change after approval, do not simply replace the paragraph and export. Check line wrapping, emphasis, the neighbouring language and the position of the final line. A single word can push text towards a seam. Establish responsibilities early using the packaging design brief worksheet, and compare language arrangements with the Arabic and English label design guide.
