The client approves a gift-box mockup showing a raised leaf, and the supplier receives a black layer named “Emboss.” The request seems clear, but it may omit a fundamental detail: which face is outside, and does the leaf rise or recede relative to that face? Preparing emboss and deboss artwork is not the selection of a three-dimensional software effect. It translates a tactile intention into a map of position, shape, and direction, followed by a material-specific feasibility review with the manufacturer.

Start with the face the user will see

PrintNinja describes embossing as raising an area and debossing as lowering it. Tie that definition to the project’s identified viewing face. “Front” is not sufficient when the unfolded artwork contains several panels. Identify the panel on the approved dieline and explicitly name its exterior surface. Do not leave the supplier to infer direction from a shadow added for presentation. [1]

The following text section explains the concept only. Its line represents the direction of one exterior surface, not the actual paper thickness or tool construction. It is not to scale and specifies no depth, shoulder angle, or radius. Those are production details unavailable in this example. A useful discussion illustration is not automatically an engineering drawing suitable for manufacturing a die.

Emboss: ____/----\____
Deboss: ----\____/----

Add a written instruction such as “the leaf rises above the exterior face.” This preserves the intention even if the mockup is missing from the email. Identify the viewing face separately for each component of a multi-part package. If assembly changes later, revisit those definitions. Moving the shape to another panel is not merely a coordinate adjustment when the viewing face or use also changes.

Tactile shape or registration to printed artwork?

The effect may follow a printed element or create a blind shape without corresponding print. PrintNinja’s setup guide distinguishes these uses while requesting a monochrome map aligned with the print file. Adopt the separation of functions, not an assumption that this supplier’s delivery format is mandatory everywhere. Ask the actual manufacturer whether they need separate files, dedicated separations, or additional explanations for multiple levels. [2]

Record the proposed function in the internal brief: distinguish an emblem, introduce an intentional texture in a quiet area, or follow printed artwork. Do not claim that adding texture automatically makes the package accessible to every user or identifiable without sight. Those claims require testing beyond this article. The task here is to review a design intention and its relationship to the artwork, not to award functional or accessibility certification.

A leaf with three explicit decisions

This hypothetical white gift box contains a small leaf motif. The first design combines the outer leaf, many fine veins, and an adjacent printed product name. Instead of asking the supplier whether the whole drawing is possible, separate three questions: which area will be formed, will it rise or recede, and must it register with a printed element? The answers establish the required map before discussion moves into tool details.

A leaf decision map, not a die specification
AreaProposed intentionReview decision
Main leaf areaBlind emboss from the exterior faceApprove the shape through a material sample
Fine internal veinsDecorative detail that may be simplifiedPresent a simplified candidate rather than impose unapproved detail
Adjacent product nameRemains printed and unformedKeep it outside the relief map and review the separation
Debossed leaf alternativeAn alternative design, not an additional operationReview separately before choosing one direction

The debossed alternative is not an instruction to emboss and deboss the same location. Identify each candidate clearly rather than placing both in the production folder as layers to run together. After selecting a direction, deliver the chosen version and retain the alternative in the review history. This small organizational step prevents an unresolved visual choice from becoming an unintended tooling cost or a production repeat.

A simplified version might omit secondary veins while retaining the overall leaf. That is a discussion proposal, not a guarantee of manufacturability. Present both versions at actual size, identify the changes and their purpose, and request supplier and design-owner review. If the leaf belongs to an approved logo, do not independently alter its geometry. Discuss an approved application variant or a different finishing location instead of distorting the identity.

Build the map without inventing its depth

Begin with the approved dieline and preserve dimensions, page boxes, and a common reference position in both print and relief deliverables. Distinguish cuts, folds, and review notes from the technical shape, and explain their roles. Do not automatically crop the relief file tightly around its artwork if the receiver expects the coordinates of the complete carton. A mockup indicating placement cannot repair a missing coordinate relationship in a production file.

Use clear boundaries in the requested delivery format and inspect small paths, openings, and isolated pieces. OWOSSO requires vector artwork for its brass dies and notes that colors can identify different levels. This supports the need for an agreed map interpretation, not a rule assigning a universal depth to each color or automatically converting a gray value into millimeters. [3]

If multiple levels are required, describe each region and ask the die maker which notation they use. Do not enter “50% black” and assume it communicates half the depth without an explicit agreement. Leave the depth field as “to be specified by the supplier after material review” when it is not approved. An honest unresolved field is more professional than a precise-looking number unsupported by tooling design or a physical test.

Do not use a software effect’s shadow as the technical shape’s boundary. The shadow belongs to the presentation simulation; the map identifies the intended area under the production agreement. Where text is involved, finish spelling and version review before preparing the technical derivative and retain editable text in the master. A reviewer should be able to determine whether a letter opening is intentional or was lost during path simplification.

Request a sample that answers specific questions

Supplier guides contain restrictions for their particular products and materials. A book-cover limit is not automatically a limit for every product carton. Instead of supplying a universal line width or depth, send the actual material, finish, scale, and artwork and ask for case-specific requirements. Associate the response with the version reviewed. Approval of a leaf on one material does not automatically cover a later change to paper, lamination, adhesive construction, or carton build. [2]

Propose examining the sample from outside and inside, then as an assembled package when available. Is the effect pointing in the intended direction? Are areas that should remain unformed outside the operation? Is there a reverse-side consequence requiring approval? Do not promise that a construction will hide a back-side effect without examining an appropriate sample. Record whether the evidence concerns a flat piece or an assembled package so that the approval does not quietly expand beyond what was reviewed.

Review the relationship to the product name, folds, and handling areas. Ask the supplier to identify necessary functional tests rather than declaring them complete from appearance alone. If direction or simplification changes after sampling, increment the version and approve the revised map. Do not silently modify artwork already used for tooling. A visually small edit can still represent a different production instruction.

Explain the outcome without pretending to design the tool

Bring together the viewing face and direction, shape map, print reference, material description, version, and sample observations. This proposed handoff structure can support FargPack packaging and identity work. When discussing an embossed or debossed carton, start with the tactile intention and material sample. A useful artwork package explains what the user is intended to see and feel while leaving tooling engineering to the specialist who will assess and manufacture it.
