ORDER: 184 BAG: 1 OF 2 NAME: AHMED

Sealed for your order”.

  • Pattern

For takeaway and delivery, packaging is an operational tool before it is an advertising surface. A beautiful bag fails if the customer name is unreadable, the seal has nowhere to go, or three sauce cups cannot be distinguished. Good takeaway packaging connects three systems: order identification, closure integrity, and brand identity.

Recent DoorDash merchant guidance recommends practices such as labeling orders clearly with the customer name, checking items during bagging, keeping orders organized, and using tamper-evident packaging. These are not universal design laws, but they demonstrate why writing space and seal placement need to be planned into the artwork from the beginning.

Map the order journey before the graphics

Write the workflow:

  1. Order enters the system.
  2. Kitchen prepares it.
  3. Packing staff gather components.
  4. Order is checked.
  5. Bag is closed.
  6. Name or order number is added.
  7. Courier or customer collects it.
  8. Customer opens it.

At each step ask what information the person needs now. The kitchen needs item names and modifiers. Packing staff need a checklist. The courier needs the customer or order number. The customer needs to identify small containers. One surface does not need to communicate everything, but the system should provide a logical location for each piece of information.

Create an operational zone that does not fight the identity

A dedicated area can include customer/order number, bag 1 of 2, a short note, and a check box. Keep the background quiet enough for handwriting or thermal labels. If staff have to write across a pattern, illustration, or logo, the packaging is working against them.

A hypothetical label could read: ORDER: 184 BAG: 1 OF 2 NAME: AHMED

Optional fields should only be included if the restaurant will actually use them. Do not invent operating procedures because they look organized in the mockup.

Reserve the seal area before styling the bag

If the bag uses a tamper-evident sticker or seal, define its location on a physical template. DoorDash recommends sealing delivery orders, and FDA food-security guidance discusses the importance of inspecting packaging and tamper evidence in applicable contexts.

A seal can carry the logo, a short phrase, an order number field, or a clear break point. Avoid absolute claims such as “100% Safe.” A seal indicates closure; it does not guarantee every safety condition in the delivery chain.

Build consistency across different containers

A restaurant may use a burger carton, fries container, sauce cup, drink cup, paper bag, and closure label. They do not need identical graphics. They need shared rules: the same labeling structure, order-number location, icon style, typography, pattern logic, and information sequence.

For example, every food container can carry a small corner code while the main bag carries the large brand mark. That prevents every sauce lid from trying to become a billboard.

Differentiate sauces and modifiers

Three identical sauce cups create avoidable confusion. A small label or letter code can help:

  • G — Garlic
  • H — Hot
  • T — Tahini

Color can reinforce the system but should not be the only signal. Low light, print variation, or color-vision differences can make color-only coding unreliable.

The same logic applies to spicy/non-spicy, regular/diet, or modified orders. Use text plus shape or code where practical.

Food-contact and temperature realities matter

Materials that touch food need to be suitable for their intended use. As one regulatory example, the FDA describes packaging, adhesives, colorants, and other relevant components within food-contact considerations.

Do not cover ventilation features, locking tabs, or structural zones with decorative elements that encourage staff to misuse the package. A packaging mockup does not authorize changes to container engineering.

Example: a family order

Hypothetical order:

  • 2 burgers
  • 1 chicken meal
  • 3 fries
  • 3 sauces
  • 2 drinks

System:

  • bag: order number + customer name + 1/2 or 2/2
  • burger cartons: B1 / B2 with a small modifier field
  • chicken carton: C
  • sauces: G / H / T
  • drinks: order number + drink type

Before sealing, staff compare the contents with the ticket. DoorDash’s order-accuracy guidance specifically recommends checking items while bagging, keeping items together where practical, and labeling orders with the customer’s name in large print.

The point is not to create a spreadsheet on the bag. Every code should correspond to a real workflow decision.

Leave room for platform or POS labels

Many restaurants receive printed labels from a POS or delivery platform. Request a real sample, measure it, and reserve a stable surface for it. A quiet label zone prevents the platform label from covering the brand mark or crossing a fold.

If the restaurant uses multiple platforms, keep that zone as system-neutral as possible rather than designing it around one provider’s exact visual style.

Design the opening moment

After all operational steps, the customer finally sees the bag, seal, first container, arrangement, and any insert. The inside experience can be simple. A short line inside a lid or a controlled interior color can be enough. A long brand manifesto sitting above hot food is usually not an upgrade.

Designer’s pre-approval test

Before approval, print dielines at actual size, apply the real order label, write a customer name with the actual staff pen, close the bag and test seal placement, load the containers, test sauce identification in low light, and confirm that food or warning copy came from the responsible party rather than being invented by the designer.

Final takeaway

Good takeaway packaging does not place branding on top of operations. It designs the operation to be clearer. Customer identification has a location, the seal has a location, components are distinguishable, and the brand remains visible without blocking functionality. When that happens, customers experience the identity through order and clarity, not simply through a larger logo.
