A tahini name can look perfectly clear against a white screen and partly disappear once the label reaches a filled jar. The background now takes its color from the contents, the surface curves away from the viewer, and reflections cross the lettering. Good tahini jar label design is therefore not just a matter of increasing type size. It requires a defined reading area, a controllable background, and correct placement on the actual container.
We will use a hypothetical glass jar to examine the problem. The example does not describe a particular brand's packaging and is not an approved manufacturing specification. Its focus is the relationship between glass, contents, and text. A jar front is not a flat strip, however many hours the designer spends treating it as one.
Identify the food before introducing its heritage story
First establish whether the contents are sesame tahini, a tahini-based sauce, or a flavored product with a different formulation. Do not use the same generic presentation for all three without reviewing their approved descriptions. A word such as “Authentic” can contribute character, but it does not answer the shopper's basic question: what is in the jar?
As a specific product example, Soom describes Premium Tahini as a paste made from roasted sesame seeds and lists sesame seeds as its ingredient. That describes the company's product; it does not establish that every product called tahini has the same formulation. [1]
In the hypothetical design, make “Sesame Tahini” the central food name once its accuracy has been approved. Give the brand name its own role. A sesame illustration can support identification, but understanding the food should not depend on interpreting the drawing. Keep promotional language subordinate, and reserve a clear, separate area for the full ingredients and required information.
Label width is not the width visible from the front
Assume a straight cylindrical labeling area with a diameter of 70 mm, without a shoulder or taper. Its approximate circumference is:
Circumference = π × diameter = π × 70 ≈ 219.9 mm.
If we trial a 210 mm-wide label, the calculated gap between its ends is approximately 9.9 mm. This is only the gap in the geometric example. The real gap or overlap depends on the container, label supplier, and application method; the calculation alone cannot determine it.
A further mistake would be spreading the product name across most of those 210 mm. That width wraps around the jar rather than forming a page the reader sees all at once. For an initial mock-up, select an arbitrary front arc of 90 degrees. Its surface length is:
Arc length = 219.9 × 90 ÷ 360 ≈ 55.0 mm.
The 90-degree choice is experimental, not a label-legibility standard. It nevertheless gives a practical reason to begin with a name block approximately 50 mm wide in this model. A 75 mm block spans roughly 122.8 degrees and wraps farther around the sides. It is not guaranteed to fail; it needs to be evaluated on the object rather than approved because it looks balanced in the flat artwork.
For a tapered jar or compound curve, stop treating this cylinder example as a cutting template. Request the technical drawing and appropriate sample. A changing circumference between the top and bottom of the labeling area changes the problem being solved.
Compare three ways of controlling contrast
Place the same name at the same size on three mock-ups, then compare them over actual contents or an explicitly identified representative sample. Do not change the font, material, color, and imagery simultaneously, or the cause of any difference will remain unclear.
| Mock-up | Construction of the reading area | Question to investigate |
|---|---|---|
| A | Transparent label with lettering close to the tahini color | Does the name merge into the background when the jar is full? |
| B | A defined opaque area under the name, with transparent edges | Does this preserve contrast while still showing some contents? |
| C | A wider opaque label with a uniform information background | Does the stable area improve reading without hiding more than the design needs to? |
Do not automatically declare the opaque version the winner. Transparency may be central to the intended identity, or the middle option may provide the necessary balance. Request a physical sample of the printed area's opacity or the label stock. A white rectangle on screen is not a test report for the print's ability to hide what sits behind it.
Where sesame-inspired colors reduce the clarity of fine lettering, consider keeping those colors for identity elements or larger areas. The product name does not have to match the food. The tahini already has the role of looking like tahini; the letters are free to do something else.
The contents do not remain a fixed background
Soom explains in its frequently asked questions that sesame oil can rise to the top as tahini separates over time. Here that information helps anticipate changes in the visible background; it does not diagnose the safety of an arbitrary jar or establish universal storage instructions. [2]
Review the mock-ups in three display conditions: mixed contents, a visible oil layer where that is expected for the approved product, and a lower fill level after use. Clearly identify representative samples. Do not manufacture a spoiled sample or use unapproved heating to achieve a particular appearance. This is a reading check, not a food shelf-life test.
On a transparent label, one word may pass across the paste, the unfilled part of the jar, and whatever is visible behind the glass. A single test on a full jar against a white wall is therefore insufficient for this design question. Try the intended shelf or kitchen context, while keeping usage and storage information readable as the fill level changes.
Locate the front in relation to label application
Mark a front centerline in the working artwork and agree with the supplier how that line will sit on the jar after application. On a wraparound label, review where the ends meet relative to the product name and information area. Do not split an important sentence between the end and beginning of the strip or assume an operator will infer the correct starting point from ornamentation.
Try a full-size paper strip with the name block and back-panel boundaries marked before finishing the illustrations. Wrap it around the container and identify what is visible from the front and what requires rotation. This establishes placement only. It does not prove adhesive performance or resistance to grease and moisture; those require supplier specifications and suitable samples.
For bilingual packaging, do not push the Arabic and English names to opposite edges of the front area merely to create geometric symmetry. That can look elegant when flat while putting the ends of both names into the curved zones. Test a vertical arrangement or a deliberate front-and-side distribution based on the actual information and language requirements.
Name sesame explicitly rather than relying on “tahini”
In the United States, sesame became a major allergen requiring declaration on covered packaged foods from January 1, 2023. FDA explains how to identify the allergen source; where a “Contains” statement is used and sesame is an ingredient, that statement must include sesame. This is a specified effective date, not a new 2026 development. [3]
For the designer, the task is to preserve the product owner's approved wording and place it where readers can find it. Familiarity with tahini among one audience does not replace explicit ingredient identification or the requirements of another market. Avoid a crossed-out nut illustration as generic decoration. An allergy-related claim has a meaning and scope requiring approval, not just a choice of icon.
Similarly, separate usage instructions from creative marketing. Soom publishes mixing and storage directions for its particular product, but those should not be copied automatically to another formulation or container. [1] Obtain the directions from the specification of the product being designed, and reserve a stable reading area before distributing the decorative elements.
Review from the reader's hand, not the application window
Hold the mock-up as the jar would normally be held and perform three tasks: read the food name without rotation, find ingredients and allergen information with rotation, and locate the usage directions. Not everything must be readable from one angle. The aim is to make the search understandable and prevent information from disappearing between edges or behind persistent glare.
Repeat under diffuse lighting and a condition producing a more noticeable reflection. Compare photographs without retouching away the problem. If glare breaks the name, discuss its position or the finish, then request another sample when the material changes. An edited photograph is not evidence that the physical packaging works.
Finally, confirm that the product name, quantity, and all text in the mock-up match the approval artwork. An attractive preview cannot compensate for outdated copy, and geometry cannot replace a physical sample. A readable tahini label combines a provisionally calculated front area, contrast examined over the contents, and approved information that remains findable as the jar turns.
