Brand: LUMA Collection: Desert Evenings Scent: Cedar & Amber Variant: No. 04
LUMA CEDAR & AMBER Desert Evenings / 04
إذا كانت الرائحة “Cedar & Amber”، لا تكتب تحتها: “a warm cedar and amber scented candle” دون إضافة شيء.
A — Front
LUMA CEDAR & AMBER Scented Candle 220 g
B — Story / product information
C — Safety

A candle label is often small, curved around a glass vessel, and expected to carry the brand, scent, collection, weight, safety warnings, instructions, and possibly a barcode. If every element receives equal emphasis, the result is a crowded label that nobody can scan quickly. A stronger approach separates the selection face from the safety and information area.
Safety information is not optional decoration. The U.S. Consumer Product Safety Commission references ASTM F2058 among the relevant voluntary candle standards, while the National Candle Association explains the core fire-safety rules commonly included on candle caution labels. Other markets may impose additional requirements, so the final label must follow the manufacturer’s applicable standards and local regulations.
First question: collection name or scent name?
Imagine: Brand: LUMA Collection: Desert Evenings Scent: Cedar & Amber Variant: No. 04
If all four appear at the same visual weight, the customer may not know what to ask for next time.
A useful hierarchy could be:
- Brand
- Scent name — largest
- Collection — secondary
- Variant number — small
For example: LUMA CEDAR & AMBER Desert Evenings / 04
In many ranges the customer shops by scent, so do not bury the scent behind a poetic collection name.
Do not repeat the scent name as the description
If the product is “Cedar & Amber,” the supporting line does not need to say “a warm cedar and amber scented candle.” An approved short descriptor can add orientation, such as “dry woods • resinous warmth • soft spice.”
Those words should come from the product’s approved fragrance description, not from the designer improvising. The same applies to emotional or wellness benefits: do not invent therapeutic outcomes from the fragrance concept.
Keep safety information structurally separate
The front can remain calm while a rear or lower panel is reserved for safety. CPSC lists ASTM F2058 among the relevant voluntary standards. The National Candle Association describes three core candle fire-safety rules commonly represented on caution labels: keep a burning candle within sight, keep it away from combustible materials, and keep it away from children.
Final wording and symbols should follow the standard or compliance system used by the manufacturer. Do not draw icons that merely resemble standardized symbols and assume they are compliant.
Vessel curvature changes readability
On a round jar, a label that is 80 mm wide in Illustrator may not be visible as a single front panel because of curvature. Print a full-size paper strip and wrap it around the actual vessel. Identify the real front viewing window.
Keep the most important elements inside that window: brand, scent, clear product identity where needed, and quantity where required by the target market. Do not stretch the fragrance name so far around the jar that the customer must rotate it to finish reading the word.
A three-zone layout example
Even on a cylindrical vessel, think of three functional zones.
Zone A — Front
LUMA CEDAR & AMBER Scented Candle 220 g
Zone B — Product information
Short approved scent description, product information, or ingredients where applicable.
Zone C — Safety
Safety text and symbols following the relevant standard, business information, barcode, and other required data.
This is a layout example only. It does not establish a universal legal position for the quantity statement.
Do not let the palette destroy the warning
Amber glass, a beige label, and pale gold type may look elegant in controlled photography but become unreadable in a dim room. Test text/background contrast, the actual substrate, warm household lighting, and metallic finishes at several angles.
Avoid relying on foil alone for small safety copy. Legibility is more important than preserving one metallic treatment across every word.
Separate marketing claims from product facts
Do not automatically add fashionable claims such as clean burning, non-toxic, chemical free, therapeutic, or mood boosting. Some claims may require definitions or evidence and can be misleading depending on context. If the product owner cannot support the claim, remove it rather than decorate it with an icon.
The same applies to a statement such as “50-hour burn time.” Burn time is affected by multiple factors. The National Candle Association describes it as an estimate and recommends following manufacturer instructions. Treat a burn-time statement as tested product data, not an aesthetic filler.
Label placement and heat
A candle label can face heat, fragrance oils, repeated handling, and cleaning. Ask the supplier about adhesive type, compatibility with glass or metal, expected temperature performance, abrasion resistance, and any placement limitations imposed by the vessel or manufacturer.
The designer should not invent those production tolerances.
A five-second scent test
Place five scent variants on a shelf and give someone five seconds. Ask which one is Cedar & Amber, which is Vanilla, and whether they clearly belong to the same collection. If the person must read tiny secondary text, the scent hierarchy is weak.
Then turn the product around and ask where the warning, quantity, and product details are. This is a quick visual-comprehension check, not a statistical user study.
Common mistakes
- Making the collection name larger than the scent without a reason
- Using decorative script for a long scent name until it becomes unreadable
- Printing warnings in tiny reflective foil
- Inventing safety symbols
- Printing an unverified burn time
- Using color as the only scent differentiator
- Giving every scent a completely different design language
Final takeaway
A good candle label tells the customer quickly what brand it is, what scent it is, and what product size they are holding. It then gives safety and product information a clear, readable home. The scent should be easy to remember, and the warning should remain readable even if the back panel is less photogenic. With candles, information hierarchy is not only an aesthetic issue; the product involves a real flame.
